I`ve recently cut my hair very short for the first time. :~ And I am absolutely in love with those cute, girly spiked hair styles, but I just don`t know how to achieve them. I would be eternally greatful if someone could give me some tips to point me in the right direction.

Thanks
Megs

Hi Megs,

To create spikes you have several options. You can use gel, paste, wax and/or spray. Each of the products have pros and cons. The wax will usually hold the spikes the best but wax will also be hard to remove in most cases. Paste is easier to remove but tends to be softer and will not as a general rule hold the spike stiffness as well or as long as a wax.

Gel is kind of a cross between the two products. For most people starting out with spikes gel can be a good product to try.

Dep7 is a great "non-sticky" non-alcohol gel that a lot of teens (male & female) use. LA Looks4 is also good for spikes but can be a little on the sticky side.

Spikes are easier to create on "day old" hair that is not too soft. As you get better with creating the look you want, you can shampoo before you do the spikes but in the first few attempts, I would suggest you try your do on "day old" hair.

Take a comb and separate your hair into small sections. Take some of the gel and massage it into your palms. Using your index and middle finger glide the gel from roots to the ends on each section of hair. Don`t apply too much gel or you will get too stiff of a look. Once the gel is applied twist the strand counterclockwise. Apply a little more gel if you wish. When you have finished creating your spikes you can spray your hair with a styling spray product.

Hope that helps.

Best wishes,
Karen

Let me tell you what I`ve used in the past. I have naturally curly hair and try to keep it short so I can manage it straight.

I use Sebastian`s Crude Clay when I`m spiking. You must use it as I describe, though, or it`ll be like putting mud in your hair:

Grab a dime-sized amount with your finger, put it in the palm of your hand. Take three fingers and rub it around in your hand till it warms up and turns translucent (kinda clear). then take it between your thumbs and fingers and spike it up from the root upward. You can really mold your hair with this stuff. It takes some practice to get it right, but that stuff is amazing!
