As a long-hair grower, I've been wondering:

1. Why split-ends occur
2. What they actually are in terms of structural breakdown of the hair
3. Can splits be prevented

This site provides some good answers: http://splitends.bebto.com/index.htm

Hope you find it useful.

Thanks to Petal for posting this at TLHS.

oh wow. I just finished reading the information. It's great, the pictures are especially helpful in identifying split ends. Thank you for sharing!

My thoughts on the causes of split ends...

Extreme bending or stretching weakens the strands at certain points. Eventually those points get so weak that the strand breaks off at that point. Now, the remaining end is frayed, and tearing it further up the strand is all too easily done, and can get worse over time.

IMO the best way to avoid splits is to treat the hair carefully and gently. Avoid combing the hair too quickly, avoid brushing the hair until it has been detangled with a comb. My hair is a work in progress, and full of imperfections, but on the whole I think I'm doing fairly well.

That is a good website! Thanks!

But I don't want to hear that you have ANY split ends, Uzma!!! You take better care of your hair than probably anyone else on this website! There's no hope for the rest of us!

I'm doing my best SuperGrover.
I've no splits yet (a friend checked me out last week-end) although my hair isn't very long at all yet - only 20 inches.

But I oil it regularly, sleep on satin, use soft scrunchies or suede/leather hair ties, etc - so - hopefully, I'll keep the little critters down to a minimum.

I wonder when they'll start coming....
.....how about you SG? Have the "little white dots" taken up residence in your tresses?

Take care

Oh yes, I have several dots.

And I used to have plenty of strands with "The Wave" on the underside where it grows out of my neck. But as we've discussed in another thread, I got those off months ago! Uzma, I recall you were very horrified to read my post. But what was I supposed to do! All that damaged hair was just entangling itself in my healthy hair and spoiling that, too!

So I still continue to cut dots out of my hair, with my Conair hair scissors. No more waves and not too many split ends. Just a few dots here and there.

I'm happy to report the better I take care of my hair, the less split ends I get!

Hi long haired gurl,

Trims of the ends of your hair will only zap splits that are actually at the ends of your hair.

Split ends can occur on any strand, not just those at the full length of your hair.

Occasionally I search through my hair for splits, and zap them with a sharp pair of scissors, carefully positioning the scissor tips over just the strand that is split, just above the point where it's split.

Does this help? And welcome to the board! Tell us about your hair, if you'd like.
