Hi ladies,
I am a newbie at extensions, I had my first install done about 6 weeks ago, they are Rinex Neo-extensions (micro-rings where the hair is double-looped into the rings, it's very sturdy)) of remy temple hair. None of the extensions have fallen out so far which is great, and I am not having any tangling problems.
However after 3-4 washes the extensions started shedding pretty badly, about 10-15 strands come out everytime I brush my hair, and I have extension hair falling out around me all day I can see them becoming thinner as the weeks go by.
What am I doing wrong? Should I call the extension artist?
Here is my haircare regimen:
- Wash with Avalon organics sulfate and paraben-free shampoo
- Condition the extensions with Uan's Crema moisturizing treatment. I try as best as I can not to get any on the rings.
- Wrap hair up in towel to remove moisture - I don't rub the hair
- Apply leave-in conditioner the extension artist gave me and work it in the ends and the lengths
- Comb gently from the bottom with wide-tooth comb
- Finish detangling with a looped extension brush
- Let dry naturally
- Finish up with hair dryer, and large paddle brush.
- Sometimes I use a curling or flat iron with a protective spray, but I can also leave them natural.
I prefer to wash my hair in the bath, the extensions become weightless in the water and I can get into the rings and wash my scalp properly. If I don't wash well enough underneath it gets really itchy and drives me crazy.
Is this ok? Thanks in advance for any tips and advice

It seems like you are using nice products but I wonder if you are shampooing a little too often? Only once a week should suffice. But that is too many to loose and I agree with Honey and call her to let her know this is happening because at that rate, you will need them all redone soon. She should also replace the ones that have come out already for you. She shouldnt charge for that because you are loosing too many too quickly in my opinion.

I did call my extensionist. She said some shedding was normal, and that about every 2 months I would need to have some of the extensions replaced when I get them repositioned back up the hair shaft to make up for the shedding. She said that the usual replacement number is 10-15 extensions per visit (the ones that have lost the most hair). At 6$ a strand that's 60-90$, plus the cost of repositioning the other strands that don't need to be replaced. Hmmmm I may just get into DIY one day at this rate...
I have to shampoo my hair every 2-3 days, if I go longer it smells and gets really itchy (sorry if that grosses anyone out) I think the extra hair makes the scalp warmer.

You can DIY!!!! It'll be much cheaper and you can do it when you feel like it and not have to be subject to your stylist's schedule. How much does she charge to reposition them?
I hope by reposition them the stylist means take them all out, comb out shed or matted hair and starts again fresh. Most people can get away with doing this every 12 weeks.
I don't believe in reopening the ring and sliding them up. It could cause breakage, root pull, or matting in the long run.
As for the shedding, I am wondering how the individual hair strands are tipped? You mentioned a method, Rinex Neo, that I am not familiar with. What do you mean by 'double looped' hair?
I know when I have used the i-tip strands on my microring clients, I usually have to reinforce the tip with more glue before installation or the client will most likely get shedding due to the tip breaking down.
If so, I would say the shedding is from the lack of glue holding the tip together. I have played around with this type of extension, but I am not a fan, especially because you can only use it one time.
Yes I had the same problem with shedding , and thanks to metal girl's suggestion of adding more glue, it added alot od reinforcement, unfortunatly the locs would not stay in my hair, but the shedding stopped.

Yes that is the system, except that there are 2 loops instead of one, she pulls the hair strand through the ring with the first loop, then brings the strand back up and pulls it through the ring a second time with the second loop. I think she is going to have to change a lot of them since they're getting pretty skinny.
The extensionist really prefers this method over fusion, she says she's seen too many damages cases from fusion. Salons pretty much all do fusion or clip-in, in this area.
I am tempted by DIY, I figure if I can DIY a brazilian wax I could do this too right what is the best method to start with if you want to try your hand at DIY?
