Okay so currently I have caramel hair with golden blonde highlights and it's been like that for quite a while. My natural colour is medium brown and as you can imagine my roots have been growing in. So my problem is that everytime I go to a salon asking for them to dye all of my hair blonde, they refuse to do it because a) my roots are dark and they won't lift and b) they don't want to bleach my hair because it will be too damaging (it's also past mid-back length). In my opinion my hair isn't all that damaged though. I've never gone for a solid colour job, just gradually have gone to the caramel colour it is today with all the hilights. So I was wondering if there was any way around this. Should I dye my roots to match the rest of my hair and then go and get them to lift it to blonde? Or should I just go in and ask for platinum blonde chunks so my hair looks really blonde, without bleaching it all? What are your suggestions on this?
Thanks in advance

I wouldnt attempt to color it yourself. It could be really hard to match up the color you have gotten from them with a store bought color.(Unless...you know what color they use and were planning on using that same color all over?)

I once went to a hair salon and wanted to get back to blonde myself, and they told me it was going to take several appointments. The first appointment left me with hair that looked like an ashtray:( Needless to say after $200 I didn't go back. I went to the store and bought the lightest blonde/no bleach just blonde color. It took me a couple of boxes, but I got the color I wanted without the expense. Also, I think starting out with different tones in your hair already will give you more of a natural look in the end. Your hair will look more natural with different tones.
Good Luck

Thanks for the suggestions guys :) I was just wondering.. what if I was really set on being blonde? Would it be possible to ask them just to bleach my roots and then use normal colour on the rest of my hair? Or am I just thinking crazy thoughts? I've been set on being blonde for years now but hairdressers have always gotten in the way. I just don't know what to do anymore.

I dont see any reason why they couldnt do it all blonde...although you may have a hard time finding one who will.
If you did attempt it yourself.....I would be sure to snip a strand of hair and do a strand test first so you can see how it will turn out before doing your whole head.Just try not to bleach the already highlighted parts, and remember that roots bleach faster because of the warmth of your scalp.
You know,I'm contemplating going back to all blonde myself. But I'm scared to try because my hair is dyed darker and that can be a real pain to get lighter.I have done it in the past but fried my hair in the process.

I can totally relate with the "inbetween" stage. It's just so annoying! I don't see why they can't bleach your roots, and then comb it through the ends for like 10 minutes at the end? I understand their concern about the damage though. You have to decide if that's a risk you want to take. You also have to be weary that you may need to cut a fair bit off it as the ends might not take well to the bleach.
I've been getting highlights for a while now, getting rid of the black dye in my hair, and it's taken it's toll. And when I told my hairdresser I wanted to go blonde we both new the fried ends and a little more would have to go. I didn't mind so much, my still sits at the beginning of my boob (I couldn't think of another description, lol). Hopefully it will only take one more salon visit, but it'll probably take two.
Don't worry honey, we'll get there!

I can't thank you guys enough for your responses, you've helped a ton! I still have a while until I go see my hair dresser, I'm waiting until a few days before Christmas to get it done. I just bought a protein treatment/reconstructer to help out with my slightly damaged hair from years of highlighting so when the time comes to get it done, my hair will be in great condition. I'll keep you posted on how everything turns out! Wish me luck.

So I have one more question for you guys. Below is a picture of the shade of blonde that I want. I was wondering if you could help me out here because I'm not too sure what shade it would be classified as. It doesn't quite look platinum, but I don't know, what do you think?

To me,it looks like more then one blonde color.I can see darker blonde underneath (maybe the model has highlights?) And the top dominating color looks to me like a pale ash blonde, maybe a beige blonde.
You should print it out and take it with you so you can show it to the stylist.
