QuoteReplyTopic: Tape disaster Posted: November 30 2007 at 11:32am
So last nite I was ready to wash my hair for the first time since I did a tape only install of two tracks (double wefted). I was already having problems with the lower track - it was loose. I pinned it in place and went for it. I must have done the tape all wrong because as soon as the hot water hit my hair ...the tracks started to come loose from the tape! The lower track which was already coming undone and was completely out of my hair by the end of my shower!!! (Earlier I was so worried about getting that tape out of my hair and now it just pulled right out!!!) I have no extensions on today at all. It was a complete disaster.
I wonder if I would have better results with the LG. I also wonder if I should use LG and tape or just LG on its own but at the moment I am tempted to make an appointment for sew ins. This is only my third install and the first two were sew ins.

What type and brand of tape are you using? I'm doing LG and supertape on some of my wefts and LG only on some. Experimenting before I try it on my daughters hair. Most stayed in fine but some loosen at different spots I believe I got conditioner on those areas.
So far, other than the conditioner issue, I prefer the LG only over LG and tape( too shiny and sticky) and sew-ins.

I like this better because it's much faster (less steps) and it lays perfectly flat against my head. I don't have to worry whether or not my braids are flat enough or will loosen.

hey kidrobot, just a few thoughts. Did you use a clarifying shampoo prior to your install? When you installed them did you make sure to press them in really really well and 'set' the tapes with heat, I use a blowdryer. Aso....what types of sytling products do you use, and did you wait long enough for the first wash and keep the conditioner off of the tapes?
Kid, this is my first LG only and LG w/tape install. Sherrie would know more and be better able to give advice but what I did do which I think worked with both was to make sure that the LG was really tacky not sticky. Nothing should be on your fingers after you've touched the LG. I fanned it with just a folded piece of paper for about a minute made sure it was tacky, pressed the weft onto my hair really good and pressed it a few more times for good measure and went over the weft part with a hot curling iron.

sherrie - No I didnt use a clarifying shampoo before the install. I did use a flat iron over the tapes to make sure it was sticking to the weft - but i guess it wasnt quite long enough? I waited 24 hours from the install before I washed my hair.
Ms Honey - If I try the tapes again, I will try the iron (or the blowdryer) over the hair and see if that helps.
i also thought maybe it didnt work cuz the tape needed to be wider? I have machine wefts of hisandher cuticle hair and there is alot of hair on those wefts (compared to the previous wefts I had). But after reading your suggestions - I guess i just need to try again after a clarifying shampoo and try out all the other great ideas.
For now I am just bummed to have such "short" hair! Without my extensions I feel like my hair is short, limp and lifeless.
shoot - I am officially hooked.

One of the great things about this technique is that it's cheap and quick. I'm sure you still have enough of your supplies left to have your weave back in tonight and you'll be happy once again

hang in there girl and give it another go before giving up. Alot of people have had the tapes fall out the first attempt, and the second attempt...waa la, works perfect, usually just by changing a few simple things. AFter that its just a matter of tweaking the method to suit you.
I dont think the width of the tape makes any difference. The short rows at my crown I cut the tapes to only 1/4 inch wide, and they hold just as long as the rest.
So I would start by making sure your hair is squeaky clean and very DRY...with no conditioner on your hair prior to install.
When you install make sure to set each row with heat. Get the tapes good and hot...and then press them like crazy...when you think you have pressed them enough, press them some more...I usually spend a few MINUTES literally on each row running my fingers over the finished row pressing them.
Then wait before washing...some say 24 hours. I try to go 2 days before washing the first time.
I havent had a taped weft fall out in FOREVER, and I can get 10-11 weeks wear out of them (with the addition of a little LG) and usually at takedown, I still have to work a bit to get them out because they are still secure.
Have you ever done a LG only install? If so, how do they compare to the LG w/tape?
Kid, the supertape strips with the words on each piece I think, are supposed to be the stongest tape. I've lost mine so I used the supertape on the roll.

Malibu / Sherrie, ok ok, I will try the clarifying shampoo. You don't think it will dry out my already dry / curly hair?
Also - I had colored my hair a week before installing the tape only install. For future reference, how do you handle a root touch-up and then tape/LG install? How long should I wait after coloring to install?

I clarify poo too. You can condition and moisturize to combat drying hair once you've installed but just make sure you avoid getting it on the LG and tapes.

I used LG for a long time. I had very good luck with LG, as far as longetivity. I could easily get 5-8 weeks out of a LG install alone, using the 'sandwich method' (this will increase the length of a LG install by a few weeks)
I found LG to be harder to remove. Not extremely hard, but definitely more work than tape for me. Seems LG just holds like cement in my hair.
Tape method alone I used for several months/maybe a year. I could get about 5-7 weeks wear. Sometimes a few loose spots that I would touch up with a bit of LG. Pretty easy removal.
Since I started combining the tape with LG, the wear time increased by several weeks. 10-11 weeks is now the norm for me. Granted they are usually well grown out with regrowth, and my roots look hideous, but they are still very secure yet when I do takedown, and rarely ever need to do any touch ups.
Removal with the tape w/'little' LG is still relatively easy. But I really think I should redo between 8-9 weeks....but I try to push it as long as I can for lack of time most times.
kid...I color and reinstall the same day, I just skip the conditioning if reinstalling the same day...the DRYER your hair the better for a tape install
When you say to set the tape with heat, how are you doing that? Do you take a flat iron and heat the tape (with the paper still on) before you apply to hair?
