They annoy the sh*t out of me.  Does anyone know how to get rid of them besides just cutting them off?  I do I not get them in the first place?

There's tons of products on the market, check out Priceline if there's one in your area. I'm not sure if they work though because I'vw been too sceptical to buy them. I think split ends are just a part of life.

Only thing to do to get rid of them is to cut them.  Several thngs can cause them:  Over brushing, combing hair while wet, coloring, perms, and a bunch more.  Here's an article that might help.

You can stave them off by shunning heat styling and keeping the hair conditioned, but they're going to show up sooner or later, so you might as well be prepared -- similar to in-laws.
Find a stylist that can do a good dusting rather than a full fledged cut or trim every few weeks to keep them at bay without losing length.

My god. I colour (bleach, no less), brush my hair when wet (not as much anymore) and do a lot more to encourage spilt ends. Oops.

Not really Tigereye. The only real way to get rid of them is to cut them.

Have you tried what those in the long hair support section refer to as the "search and destroy". It is where you take some scissors and in a brightly lit area, trim off only the hairs you see with the split ends?
A while back there was a product called the split ender (or something like that) that claimed to only take off hairs with a split in them.It was one of those as seen on tv things. i'm not sure how well it worked though and I havent seen any in while.

Using a hair smoothing serum helps smooth the splits down and makes them less noticeable. My favorite is Tigi Bedhead After-party.Frizz ease is ok too.
Using cold water also helps make the splits less noticeable when rinsing.

And,my favorite,an IONIC blowdryer really helps make them less noticeable too if you are the kind of person who loves your blowdryer.
