Topic: I want to donate my hair... Posted: July 12 2002 at 7:53pm
to the cancer patients that have no hair. My hair is 22 inches long and a friend told me about donating hair that is 10 inches long, and has not been colored or permed. That`s me, all natural. : ) If anyone has heard of this program or knows who I need to get in contact with, please let me know.

David - You are Da Man! Wow, that site has so much information. You can even nominate a child for a LOCKS OF LOVE hair prosthesis. I will be cutting my hair at the end of the summer. I am still looking for shoulder length hair styles (for a 25 - 35 year old :) ). If you come across any sites, please let me know.

Hey David -
I really do appreciate your info on locksoflove.com, but wanted to let you know I did some research on them and got some opinions from others via the message board and the Better Business Bureau and they were not all good news about Locks Of Love.
I have since posted on the American Cancer Society message board and sent an e-mail directly to ACS.
Thanks again for your time.
Keep Smilin` Dorothy :)

Good for you doing your own research. Make sure you are comfortable with whatever you do.
Enjoy, David

Doro7, there is another organization called "wigs for kids". A friend of mine donated hers to that group because she didn`t trust locks of love either. By the way, be careful in the haircut department. My friend who donated her hair, got whacked by an overzealous stylist that cut her waist lenth hair to a pixie. I`m sure your hair is very lovely and it is a shame that you are cutting it. Make sure the cutter knows you only want 10" off, not a pixie. Good luck and be sure to take the pony tail with you and send it yourself. Some shops claim to send in the hair, but rather sell it themselves and pocket the cash. Considering your sacrifice, that would be a very cruel thing to do.

In April I had 12" cut off, to a bob cut under my chin. The owner of the salon wanted my hair to send to Locks of Love. It made me feel good to donate my hair to a good cause. It was the extra push I needed to cut my long hair and try something new. I haven`t yet read the bad rap on Locks of Love, but that`s unfortunate that an organization with a wonderful ideal could go astray.

From what I`ve read, Locks of Love is a good organization that does good work. However, I would not recommend that someone cut his or her hair specifically to donate to the charity, if that person did not already want to cut the hair. The hair does not necessarily go to the wigs. Some of it is sold to pay for the manufacturing costs. So, if you want to keep your hair, I`m sure they would happily take money.

WoW!...
Thanks for all your suggestions and opinions. I am now researching Wigs for Kids: http://www.wigsforkids.org/
The one main thing that I liked about them is that they provide wigs at no cost to children who have lost their hair.
I went to Books-A-Million tonight and looked through some hair magazines: 101 HairStyles and Sophisticate`s Hair Style Guide. I am still trying to deside on a shoulder length style for me (Hint, Hint)
Keep Smilin` Dorothy :)

Good for you. Not only will you be gratified with your gift but you will be happy with your new cut (I can sense that you will). As for the style, I`m not a fan of shoulder length hair but I think a bob is always very classy. You can alter the length accordingly - though I would suggest around chin length. There is also the semi-shag going around. I`m not sure of the name used but it has many layers and flips out at the bottom layers.

If you can post your picture I`m sure we can flood you with ideas... It`s hard to suggest a style without seeing you. I`m not sure how to post pic within messages but I know it can be done... can anyone out there tell Dorothy (and me) how to include a picture with in a post?

I finally got a reply from the American Cancer Society, Yeah!

Based on your message, it sounds like you are interested in donating hair so that it can be used to make wigs for cancer patients. Although the American Cancer Society does not currently offer a national hair donation program, you may be interested in contacting an organization called Wigs for Kids. This organization`s contact information and a short description of its services have been provided below:

Hal - I will try to get a picture up. No, I do not know exactly how to do it. I have an idea but I don`t want to mess anything up on my PC. I will ask my rocket scientist hubby (he works for NASA :) ) when he gets home today. I appreciate your concern and helpfulness.
