QuoteReplyTopic: Home Highlights Posted: December 27 2007 at 3:55am
So I have a full head of salon highlights, some of the highlights are lighter than others, and some are really dark blonde. My question is, is it a good idea to buy a home dye, or streaking kit, and pin up my hair and do random highlights with say, a pastry brush? Granted I'll do a strand test and all. I feel like it would be doable. Has anyone ever attemped doing their highlights like this? Is it harder than imagined, and easy to screw up? It's weird cause I would never put one through my whole hair, but this just seemed like a cool idea.
Also, would it affect the dye my hairdresser puts in next time? It would probably damage my hair, too right?
Thanks for responses. <3

A pastry brush I haven't tried, but I have used a mascara wand. That works okay. I find the best thing is to use my fingers...believe it or not. Then wrap the little strand up in foil. I am not sure what color your colorist is doing, the highlights may or may not be visible depending on the amount that you do. If you get them too light though, and the colorist uses an ash green dye on your hair, they may turn green. However, it will fade. I like L'Oreal Excellence Creme lights--it's formulated to be used on already dyed hair. Hope this helps.

Well, dont pick a highlighting kit that says stuff like "dramatic" or "frosting"
those are most likely to be the ones that lighten ALOT and are high lift for darker hair.
I'd chose one that says "subtle" highlights. And try to pick it so the colors on the box are close to what you have now.For instance, some will say for light brown to dark blonde.Others will say for light blonde to dark blonde...
If you do it,keep an eye on the color.Highlighting kits (in my opinion) tend to lighten faster then dyes.So you may not need to leave it on the whole twenty minutes or whatever.
When you do a strand test, just pick one chunk of hair, maybe in the back or underneath so if you dont like it,it wont be noticable.

I'm going to make an appointment at the hairdresser, and after if I think I want lighter highlights I'm definitely going to try them myself. If I wasn't bleaching I'd have no problem with dying my hair at home, I did it for about a year. Grr blonde is so annoying.

I dont think it does...I think it is only activated after mixing it together (most say something in the instructions about throwing it away after it has been mixed and set out for an hour or something)
I have done it like that many times and it was always fine.

I've never mixed bleach (though my mum did for me when I was about 13) should I just follow the directions on the box and I'll be fine? I don't know anything about protein fillers, but would it be a good idea to use one as well (mixed with the bleach?)

I dont know about using a protein filler WITH bleach. You could use it before bleaching though, sorta like a pre-treatment. I think the directions say to put it on damp hair and leave it on about 15-20 minutes.
When I use the protein filler I usually mix it with color or use it before coloring. It helps the hair accept the color better.
It may help make hair stronger before bleaching though.

Ok,the protein fills in weak spots in the hair, making it stronger,so it's less likely to get damaged when coloring or bleaching.
It also helps the hair to accept color evenly (great when changing colors so you dont end up streaky-like)
This is what I have,it's called neutral protein filler by COLORFUL.
Here are the directions as written:
insures marvelous color results.Equalizes hair porosity for even color absorption and development.Repairs previously damaged protein bonds.Protects hair against new chemical damage.Adds body, volume and lusterous shine.
When tinting:
Apply one to two ounces to towel damp hair for 20 minutes.
Blot excess from hair,DO NOT RINSE.apply color as usual.
Can be used as an excellent reconstructing conditioner simply by diluting it with one third water. You'll be amazed by it's performance.
So...I would use it maybe the day before you bleach.Since you arent coloring, you can use it as the reconstructing conditioner,or I'd leave it on 20 minutes and then rinse.
