QuoteReplyTopic: Used Feria, now I'm scared! Posted: January 17 2008 at 8:41pm
Hi, everyone! Not sure if any of you remember me.. I get on here and post every once in a while. My last post was asking about how to go about dyeing my blonde hair back to my natural dark brown at home and I got some great help! My attempt was successful, although the color does seem to fade quite a bit and fairly quickly so I've had to dye it about once a month. It's kind of tough because I'm trying to get a nice golden DARK brown shade and not too many lines make that shade. The ones I've tried have all turned out gorgeous initially but then the brown fades to something much more like a medium brown, not a dark brown, so my roots still end up showing.
Anyway, the last dye I tried was Feria's Shimmering Dark Golden Brown (think that's what it was called anyway) that I bought from Sally's. The color was soooo pretty for a little over a week after I dyed it. It was just perfect and I loved it! But then of course it faded like the others and just isn't the same. So I figured I'd be trying yet another brand next time (was thinking Revlon Colorist in Dark Golden Brown <doesn't contain ammonia> or Herbal Essences Deep Bronzed Brown <I think that's what it was called>) or maybe even shoot for something semi-permanent since it looks like I'll have to continue dyeing it fairly frequently until this grows out and want to avoid damage as much as possible. But I just happened to come across a thread on page two in which someone was having problems with Feria and got this reply: "NO ammonia-based product can ever be used over metallic color. The result will be smoke, and burned/melted hair. I've seen this happen, so i know it's true. This means no perms, no professional color, and no bleach." So does this mean that whatever dye I use next absolutely cannot contain ammonia? What if I were to use a non-ammonia based product next time, would I be able to go back to using dyes that contain ammonia after that, or could it still have a bad result?
Also, does anyone happen to know of a dark golden brown semi-permanent dye that would be available at the drugstore or at Sally's? I can't find one anywhere!
Thanks in advance!

I'm not sure, I have used feria in the past, and I highlighted my hair on top of it (bleach) and nothing happend to my hair.
Maybe to be absolutely sure, writing to the company would be the best move.
Or,maybe someone else here will have more info.

This is complete paranoia... ''there will be smoke'', haha!
Don't worry, I have covered up or bleached a previous Feria color 4-5 different times in the past with another color from another brand and it never melted or burned. I too have seen these idiotic rumors online, some people love to transmit unverified claims so they can be seen as experts on some threads or add a post to their numbers.
I was so fed up with that particular Feria myth that I registered in this forum here just to reply to you about it, so, umm, Hi!

I've used feria since i was like 16... dark shades like red and black... never had a problem ever.... my hair is blonde now...that sounds like hair 'bull' to me...
If your hair is washing out, trying using color boosting shampoos and maybe just glosses, have you tried that?

I didn't see this post until now so I'm kind of late on this one. My source was behindthechair.com and I read about it on the hair color part of the forums. It's a website for salon professionals. I also found info on hair color removers and found they are not to be used on metallic dyes.
If you search the internet, it is pretty clear Feria contains metallics. If you search for "Feria" metallic", you find that even the names of some of their colors have the word metallic in them such as "silver blond metallic".
There was a recent post on here from someone who had used a dark Feria color and her hairdresser was unable to bleach it out and then refused to further treat her upon the advice of her supervisor. I also heard that Metalex, a different sort of hair remover, removes metallics. A few treatments with Metalex may be enough to remove all the metallics and then must be followed by bleach to lighten the hair. (See post: Hair Color Removers: 3 Main Types)
From the experiences shared here, though, I wonder if only some Feria dyes contain metallics. Or perhaps we are all being fooled. If I can't trust the professionals, though, I don't know who to trust. There is one way to be sure if Feria dyed hair will react, however. (source: behind the chair) Cut a few strands of hair and put it in a bowl with perm wave solution. If it reacts/bubbles, it has been treated and it will also react with bleach or ammonia based hair color.
If this Feria business is just a rumor on the web, it is quite a powerful one, and widespread too. To know for sure though, I would always do a strand test rather than risk losing and/or damaging my hair.

Perhaps only the darker colours such as black, and the colours that would need the most staying power, such as red have metallic dye. There also called "direct dyes", and I have reserched them a little bit as well and have to agree with PerfectBrunette.

My goodness, smoke?! Hmm, maybe if you mixed them together, just kidding, not even! I think the thing about Feria is that the dye used in it is sometimes very difficult to remove, especially if it's black and then you want to bleach and tone your hair to pale blonde. Otherwise, after it fades try something new and dye away! Happy coloring!
Hope this helps.

Oh and one more thing...you mentioned the color wasn't as pretty when it faded? Can you find something to use in between root touch ups to keep the color fresh? Igora has some nice toning mousse, also you can use a demi that would compliment the color you used. Just a thought!
believe it or not, Miss Clairol Chestnut brown, which is a light brown with a green base is supposed to have a pretty warm tone to it, think of the color "Chestnut". You might try that color. I use Miss Clairol Moongold and it's very pretty!
