This is my first post. I've found a lot of useful information in these posts and enjoy reading them. Anyway, I seesaw back and forth between wearing my hair short and growing it. By the time it reaches just below shoulder length, I usually get frustrated with how it looks growing out (layered and some damage) and get it cut short again. This is usually about a 2-year process. I got it cut short (pixie-ish) 2 weeks ago and almost immediately regretted it. I always fall into the trap of thinking short hair is easier to care for and style but yet it requires too many products and heat styling to get it to look right. Maybe that's my problem. The heat styling damages my hair and when it's grown to shoulder length, the damage is very apparent. Well, my 6 year old daughter gasped when she saw me right after I got home from having it cut. She has hair down to her waist - all one length and very healthy looking (no heat styling). Looking betrayed, she said, "I thought you were growing it out." Then she said, "It DOESN'T look good on you." (Which is probably the truth versus mean spiritedness - she has a good eye for those kinds of things.) Then with a gleam in her eye she said, "Guess what......it's growing right now".

Caramia - Aren't kids the greatest? I have the same vicious cycle going too...I did my last really short cut last May - so i am in year 1 of the grow out phase. When i got it cut short last year my sons didn't like it....but I think it is because they don't like drastic change.....So I make the suggestion(jokingly) now and they all scream in unison "NO! Don't cut it!!" Talk about pressure.

You and Jacqui both mention your kids pleading with you not to cut your hair, and Jacqui mentioned "pressure." But from reading the messages you've both posted, it seems as though you both truly want to grow your hair longer. So I wonder... is their pleading really pressure if it's consistent with what you actually want?
Hmm...

I really do want to grow it long. Now that I'm armed with some knowledge (re: the hazards of heat styling, coloring, etc. and how to be gentler to my hair), I think it will look better as it grows out. And I doubt I'll want to cut it (I used to cut it to get rid of inches of damage that I used to have). It's also an instant gratification thing (seemingly) - to cut it off into a cute style rather than be patient and diligent with your haircare regimen like most of you sound like you are. And the hairstyle magazines have nice photos of short hairstyles and hardly any long (obviously they don't make as much money promoting the beauty of long hair). But now I know where to turn for inspiration so next time I feel the temptation to get a shortcut, I'll logon and look at pics of you folks and your beautiful, beautiful hair on this site.

Good to hear they are wonderful support for you, Jacqui. Maybe you'll consider all of us here to be among your supporters, too.
Caramia, I have no doubt that your hair's condition will improve with your newfound knowledge. You are most definitely right about the industry's perception of its vested interests, and about the deferred gratification aspect of getting long hair. Another reason why having long hair is special.
