Please allow me to introduce myself to the forum.  I have thick, naturally wavy hair.  In my childhood and up to my mid teens I never used a hairdryer and always hated my hair because of the way it would curl.  So I started to dry it straight and I've been suffering the consequences ever since but its gotten really bad here in the last few months.  When I let my hair air dry it ends up extremely curly in the main front framing my face, the ends curl up and the sides and the curls are actually really pretty and look like I have a perm.  The back of my hair however seems to straight right in the middle.  I have tried scrunching it with gel made especially for curly hair and it works.  But then the next day most of the curl comes out and I will use a wide tooth comb and start from the bottom up then my hair is nothing but frizz and looks really stringy.  So I have went back to drying it with a hairdryer but my hair really holds in and absorbs water so if I use a low setting it takes forever so I usually dry it on high in a about five minutes.  I wash it with Sunsilks TLC shampoo and conditioner.  I use a lot of conditioner and pay special attention to the roots and tips.  When I do that my hair looks sleek for about a day and a half then the oil seeps in.  I forgot to mention I have oily hair so using conditioner like that really causes my hair to get super oily super fast.  My biggest problem is that my hair is breaking at the root on top of my head.  After I dry my hair I notice little hairs about an inch or two that are broken off and sticking up all over my head.  If I get out in the rain or any humidity my hair instantly starts to curl and even the breakage.  What can I do?

Are you using conditioner at your roots? If so, just try it from your neck down the length. I have a very oily scalp and as long as I don't use conditioner on my scalp, it can't make things worse.
Sometimes shampooing often will make your hair produce more oil. How often do you wash your hair? I wash mine every other day and it still gets really oily after 1 day. I have tried stretching it out but it doesn't help, and my face is the same way. Washing less often does work for a lot of people though.

Those short hairs you see may be new growth and not breakage. The best way to find out is to see if they're tapered or blunt at the ends. If they're blunt, then it's breakage. New hairs will be tapered

You may be still seeing the breaking effects from the hot straightening iron. Be patient; your short hairs will soon be long and heavy enough to fall flatter and blend in. Yours, Bob Star

1. The biggest reason people hate their curly hair is because they don't know how to handle it, treat it, and style it.  Sounds like you are well on your way in that area now.  Experimenting is the key.

2. Don't comb your hair out until you're ready to wash it.  Combing/brushing destroys the curl pattern causing frizz and fluff.  The next morning, try spritzing it with water (add a tsp of lime juice for extra perk) to revive the curls and scrunch again.  Do spot touch-ups with a little gel if needed.
