seriously, is it just me or does anyone else NEVER get a good haircut? i have yet in my 21 years of life to find a freakin hair dresser that knows the difference between half an inch and three inches when i get a freakin trim!! my hair was the longest it's been in about three years which still wasn't very long buy my hair grows really really slow. i simply asked for a LITTLE TRIM and even showed her how much to cut and she still cut about three inces off and even more in some parts of my hair. i can barely put it in a pony tail now because the top layers of my hair are so short. Am i just being a drama queen? or does this happen to other people?!?! sorry to vent to you guys i am just really upset about my hair :(

No, it's not just you, laceydon. When I started dating my wife eons ago, we went together for her "trim". Two inches became eight! I blew a gasket, but the hair was cut. I couldn't believe it.
Stay away from salons if you want long hair. Or bring a measuring tape, and tell the person that if more hair disappears than was requested, you won't be paying. Best of luck, Bob

Every third haircut my wife gets is a tragedy; we're not sure why. This happens even when she goes to the same stylist. She had been going to this guy for three years and got her haircut every six to seven weeks. Even with him, every third cut wasn't what she wanted. He left to go travel around Europe and was gone for six months. She had a different stylist at the same salon cut her and he did the same thing. The worst was when the guy came back from Europe and she started back with him; this first haircut with him after his was truly the worst she has had in years. Her hair was just below her shoulders and slightly layered and she was still trying to grow out bangs from an earlier mistake (they were almost chin length at the time); after he finished with the cut, she had which could only be described as a bi-level; her bangs were tip of the nose, her hair by her ears just barely covered them and the back was shoulder skimming. She's now with a new guy at a different salon and he's only cut it twice; this Friday is the third cut with him; we'll see what happens.
As for me, I generally get a good cut but mine's a basic Marine Corps medium regulation; hard to screw it up. For me, the difference between a good haircut and a bad one is about two weeks.
why can't i be a guy?!?! lol just kidding. but thank you for being there for your wife bob! my boyfriend says "why are you even going to get your hair cut, you will just bitch about it anyways?"
and my goodness, this just makes me so mad. it seems most guys dont understand that you need to trim your hair every so often to get all of the split ends off. especially because i straighten my hair occasionally, and the ends are pretty fried from previous bleachings. i wish it were as simple as my boyfriend thinks, huh? and to top it all off, i get back from the salon with a freakin mullett lookin hair cut and he says "you paid for that? i can't even tell the difference, you look the same."
i know that it doesn't look the same at all, cuz i have had 4 or 5 of my friends/ co workers either ask me why i cut my hair so short when it was finally starting to get long, and a few even told me my haircut looked like a mullett. i am starting to feel like this is a conspiracy against all women. lol.
thank you guys for reassuring me, and thanks for the tip about the tape measure, bob! that's such a good idea. another idea of mine was to try to trim my own hair. does anyone trim their own?

The girl that cuts my hair now, I trust 100%. I've been going to her for about 10 yrs. If anything she doesn't cut off enough (when I wanted it short) She would always say she can always go shorter, after cutting off little. And, she was afraid my husband come after her lol, she knew he liked my hair long.
Anyways before finding her I had same trouble you do. Tell them to trim it and they take off 6" or tell them to cut off an inch and they cut off 6". Finally what worked for me was telling them just to snip off the ends.
I trim my own hair. On this board I read about that all the time, people getting bad cuts. I think part of the problem is probably miscommunication, part of it is stylists who just won't listen no matter what you say, and part may or may not be inadequate training.
Its a bit of a challenge until it reaches close to bra strap length, (after that you can just do Feye's scrunchy cut method and it comes out perfect).
Before that length though, you just have to take your time, hold each section of ends exactly the way it hangs when your head is straight without moving it, and cut across. Plan out what you're going to do and mull it over in your head for awhile (especially that first time), and cut less than you will wind up wanting off so you have some wiggle room if you make a mistake.

Yes, it can be a problem. The girl I have now, for some reason, really remembers what I like from visit to visit ("I know you don't like me to use the straight iron because it makes it too flat," she'll say). And she barely trims anything...and I'm always a chicken to ask for much. I got in the habit for years of asking for a half inch off if I really wanted 2 inches, etc. Now she does exactly what I ask, and sometimes it's not really enough, but I like to err on the long side.
Another thing I have found in all these years is that stylists don't know how to STYLE hair!!! They sent me out looking so weird. But the gal I have now --who thought she wanted to be a nurse and hasnt been doing hair all that long -- sends me out the door looking like a Hollywood movie star. I swear we'd all be better looking if we could have someone like THAT working on our hair every day. For some reason, she's the only one who has EVER had a knack for styling. Wow, do I love it. So I guess, keep looking. The good ones are out there.
