QuoteReplyTopic: Hair Extension Help!!!! Posted: February 21 2008 at 4:54pm
Hi Everyone this is my first question on the forum. I have had two different types of extensions done professionally. I have had track sewn in extensions and Micropoint hair accents. I did not like either. Micropoint accents is what I have in now. The first time I had 100 accents put in and they fell out in a week and cost me 800.00$. The stylists said she would redo my hair for free than charged me 800.00$ again because she put in 240 accents.I spent 1600.00$ and my hair still looks terrible!! It looks stringy and uneven and half the extensions have fallen out. I am going for a consultation tomorrow with a new stylist that says he has been doing extensions for 18 years. How do I know if he is a good extension stylist and he will do a great job. The best my hair has ever looked is when I glued hair extensions in myself, although it really took a toll on my hair. Any advice for me finding a great extensionist in Sarasota,Fl???
Thank you

There are lots of ways to find an extension stylist in your area, yellow pages, internet search......
When you interview stylists the #1 rule is ask for a portfolio of their work.
Get a referral from the stylist, and contact the person with questions.
Come in to watch your stylist at work. If they are good they should have no problem with you watching them.
Another rule of thumb is to go with the type of install your stylist suggests for you. Generally, they will pick a method that they are experienced in. The more experience the better.
Best of luck, and let us know how your new install works out.
Good luck with your search. I consulted with a couple of people near me and then got the referral from many members on this board to make a trip to see MetalGirl in Shingle Springs and I am soooooooo glad I did. The other two I consulted with did only one method(one links, one GL) and neither of them really inspired confidence and then I met with Lisa and she does many different methods and was able to choose the one she thought was right for me and she was much more affordable so it is worth the hour and a half drive. Not to mention that she has been doing extensions for about 16yrs. I am getting mine done on Thursday!

Hello, I too have been wearing extensions for a while. In an effort to find a better and more cost effective means since I wear them all the time I have found a place for supplies on line and they carry real remy european hair. I propose that we help one another out and install each others extensions. It is really not that dddifficult and we could save ourselves at least 800.00 dollars for every time we have them redone. Please consider this proposition.

Kelli, it's a really good idea. Are you referring to fusion? I wear sew in tracks so I don't pay that much for each install but when I wore fusion I could have really benefited from your proposal.

Yes Malibu, I am talking fusion. My hair is too fragile for sewn in tracks. I know that I can do a whole head for under $400.00
I 'll be honest, I am an educated professional in marketing and I realize that these hair stylist are professionals but am not willing to pay them over 50 dollars an hour any longer, then they expect another 50 dollar tip. I have a masters degree and don't make 50 dollars an hour. The hair is not that expensive. Stylist are exploiting women's desires in vanity.

Not all stylist explout their customers. The ones I know are on their feet constantly and you can only imagine the wear and tear on their bodies. I used to work in Orthopedics and we had a TON of stylists patients that had severe knee and back issues because of this. I don't mind paying for good service for something that I don't have the patience or time to do myself. I do agree that some stylists are not there in the clients best interest but I wouldn't lump them all into that category.
I consulted with two local ladies for GL and "beauty locs"(microlinks) and both of them were charging over $700 just for the hair and then $120/hr for install but neither of them inspired confidence and then I went to Metalgirl who is an hour and a half drive from me and my cost for the hair was less than half(for the same amount of hair) of previous quotes. She said she does not mark up her hair(as so many do!) and she is honest about it. That makes all the difference IMO.

Kelliott, I understand your frustration but with that said you also need to do some more homework.
Hair is not at a set price. It really depends on the quality. You need to find the right hair for you. If you don't have time to do that (and it could take a LOT of trial and error and wasted money) and you need your extensionist to do it for you then yes, you'll have to pay extra for that service.
I also have a masters degree and I would think since you mentioned yours you would know that just because you have a masters degree does not mean you should be paid more than a hair stylist. You're starting to sound c*cky.
As for the fifty dollar tip....Where have you been getting your hair done? Madison Ave?

Malibu I have done the research and have found the correct and quality hair. I don't tend to go off half c*cked without research. As for the tip... not Madison Avenue, I am just not cheap to those who perform a service for me!
And I do think there is a problem when someone charges me 3x the cost of something. This is why I live well and will retire well. So you go ahead and give your money away. Or sew in hair for cheaper service... I will find a better way as there always is one.

Can anyone that has had sew in extentions answer a question for me? Are these things suppose to feel so tight. I had them put in yesterday and they are driving me crazy. It feels tight and it itches like crazy. How much damage is this going to do to my hair and scalp? I don't want to take them out but - I don't know if I am going to get use to this feeling and I am going on vacation to Florida this Thursday. Can someone please help me decide to take them out or not before I go.
Thank you,
Deanna

Thank you for the advice. I had a consulatation and the stylist was working on a client when I arrived at the salon so I was able to see his work. The stylist offered so much information to me before I went through all the questions I wanted to ask him he had already answered them. He seemed very confident in his work but also down to earth and genuine. I will be getting the fusion hair extensions on Thursday and I am really excited!!

Good Luck Df! I am getting mine on Wednesday. When I met one of the people I consulted with, I let her know that I had researched a lot already and she still spoke to me like I had no idea about anything and then when I asked about silicone lined microlinks she acted like she didn't hear me. UGH! LOL When I met with Lisa, she had like a 20pg handout of her information, her systems, her experience etc and I was sold immediately. LOL I can't wait to post pics!

I guess I am not too far off ladies. I just received a call from a extension specialist in Bradenton Fl who will do the Great Lengths for 700.00 and she will put in my own strands for 3 dollars a piece. Just shows that knowledge and persistence pays off! More options arrive daily ladies!!!

Isn't it amazing what you can get when you educate yourself (self-reliance) and investigate accepting nothing less than what you know to be true, (self-worth)... not relying simply on what others think they know!

Even though I am one of those "instant gratification" people lol, I research everything to the nth degree so I am pretty comfortable with my decision. Due diligence is always required on my part. That way if something goes bad, I can't blame anyone but myself. LOL My friends think I am crazy for taking all the time before I do something but it saves me time and heartbreak in the end.

So....you tip the $50, come on a forum and cry about it and now you're saying this $50 tip is the amount to avoid being cheap...you seem to be talking out of both sides of your mouth. Cheap is coming on a hair forum and asking (in your first post) if anyone, a total inexperienced stranger will do hair extensions on your hair, fusion no less. You'll be retiring with no hair on yo head mama I guess you'll just keep mentioning to your peers that you have a masters degree.
If you do some more research you'll see there are DIY methods that you can do on your own... no need for those $50 tips that you seem to feel is so appropriate and with that mentality (where did you go to school?) you won't be sitting pretty during your retirement. Most likely Namaste will be the last thing you're thinking. By the way, do you know what Namaste actually means or are you again speaking out of both sides of your mouth?
