QuoteReplyTopic: Relaxer and Extensions Posted: March 06 2008 at 9:15pm
Hey All!
I have a two part question. I have wavy/curly coarse hair. I really want to relax it. Flat ironing it is such a hassle and a lot of times it is curly again by the end of the day.
1. Has anyone tried the Phytospecific No-Lye relaxer? Would that be gentler than daily blow drying and flat ironing?
2. I am thinking about putting some extensions back in also. I like individuals, but, would prefer not to do links or fusion. Is there a good shrinkie that isn't lined with adhesive? I am just sooooo paranoid after having damage from fusion.
Anyway, let me know what y'all think! Thanks....

I neva heard of Phytospecific No-Lye relaxer, but I don't think it would be gentle, I don't kno much about relaxers but I do kno that them "No-Lye" ones are very bad for your hair & I'm a newbie @ extensions so sorry I can't offer you much advice..

Yep, I read that too, although I hear that Phyto is a good relaxer. There is also one by Matrix, "Opti-Smooth" or something like that that hairdressers rave about.
I think you should stick to blowdryering and flat ironing, but only twice a week (so no washing in between). If you do it after a good deep conditioning and apply heat protectant, you will see very little damage.
Love clip-ins and tape!

You can texurize until you are ready to go full throttle with a relaxer. Just don,t leave the relaxer in long and comb through it with a big tooth comb. This will soften up your natural curl. Start from the endz to the root last. Process shoul only take depending on the amount of hair you have no more than 15min.

I don't know what kind of damage you had with fusion, but GENERALLY damage from extensions (any method) can be attributed to a combination 1 or more factors:
The install
The care of your extensions
The removal process
I don't know which one of these factors caused your damage (nor am I making any assessments), but I just wanted to throw that out there first.. There are lots of ladies here who have had good success with fusion installs.
As for shrinkies, I don't think that non adhesive lined shrinkies are going to prevent damage to your hair.. If you want to maintain your hair's health, you need to be mindful of the quality of your install, the care of your extensions while wearing them and ensure that you do a proper removal to get good success while protecting your natural hair..

Unlined shrinkies with no adhesive may slip out. Most people definitely
agree that adhesive lined shrinkies are the way to go. In fact when I
wore shrinkies, I rarely had any slip out. Also if the hair sheds, that
isnt related to the shrinkie, thats caused by a poorly tipped strand.

"Guanidine hydroxide relaxers are usually advertised and sold as "no-lye" relaxers. Although technically they are not lye, the hydroxide ion is still the active ingredient. These relaxers straighten hair completely, with less scalp irritation than other hydroxide relaxers. Although they reduce scalp irritation, they do not reduce hair damage. They swell the hair slightly more than other hydroxide relaxers and are also more drying, especially after repeated applications." - Milady Cosmetology.
To answer your question. It probably would do more harm then good to your hair. Flat ironing and blow drying damage your hair, but they only break hydrogen bonds in the hair while chemical services such as relaxing break disulfide bonds. What ever you do, PLEASE do not relax your own hair. I'm not trying to be stingy. I say this because I once used the wrong relaxer for my hair type and my hair was fried and broke off at the ends. (I had bleached my hair a few months prior) I also had relaxed my hair before and didn't pay attention to the different ingrediants they both contained and the two mixed and caused my hair to fall out even more. (THIS IS WHY IM AT HAIR BOUTIQUE ON THE HAIR EXTENSION FORUMS LOL!!!!) Even if you have lovely virgin hair I would still go see a pro. There's so many events that can go wrong with chemical services.
I'm selfish, impatient, & a little insecure, I make mistakes, I am out of control, & at times, hard to handle. But if you cant handle me at my worst, then you sure as HELL dont deserve me at my best

Thank you so much! I've always wondered the answer to this question. Are you in school still? You sound like you'll be an excellent stylist.

This is why IF I relax my hair again (still debating), I will no longer be using no-lye relaxers.. While my hair did just fine for YEARS with no-lye relaxers, I'd hate to take all this wonderful new growth I'm got and subject it to a treatment which is potentially drying to my hair..

ITA.. This is one reason why I have NEVER relaxed my own hair.. And up until recently why I did not attempt to color my own hair.. (Though lately I've worked my way up to using demi and perm colors to deposit color and cover my greys)
