QuoteReplyTopic: tape vs. strand by strand questions Posted: March 26 2008 at 1:13pm
hi ...I have had the strand by strand method before and was thinking of trying the tape method....I was also looking at metal girls godiva flat strands and wanted to know what would be the advantages/disadvantages of either method. Can you still put your hair up with tapes? can you swim/etc? what about when it is really windy outside.....how does it blow when your hair blows in the wind? is it easy to remove the tape vs. strand by strand? Do you need really strong hair for the tape? How long should you wear the tape method?
I know this is the right expert forum to help me out with these questions :)
I would say the major differences between any strand method and a flat, weft type method is:
*length of time you can wear them, strands up to 16 weeks, and flat wefts, most people go 6-8 weeks.
*wefts are much quicker and easier to apply
*You can still put your hair up with taped wefts, but strands are usually easier to do in an 'up' style
*taped wefts are much easier and faster to remove, as long as you have the right product for the job. I have a great spray in remover that works like a charm
*most people wearing the taped method do it because they have finer hair and it's easier to conceal
*if it's really windy outside, any method can show if the wind blows in just the right way-sorry
*You can swim with the tapes in, I have before and it wasn't a problem
Ultratress seamless wefts are taped in with the pro flex 2 tape. The company, Onrite, also says you can use a brush on adhesive for more bonding power, but I find it too messy.
Whether more hair comes out with wefts or strands really varies from person to person, since some people's hair sheds out easier than others, regardless of hair extension method used. Unfortunately there is no hard and fast rule for each method.
I know you are concerned about the safety of your natural hair and that is great that you are doing your research. Overall, I think most methods are safe as long as the person applying them does it correctly, the client takes care of them correctly, and the removal is done correctly.

Yes, yes, yes to all stated above. I wear a combination of tapes, skin wefts and clip-ins (yeah, jumbled!) and I NEVER find it damaging to my natural hair. It is so easy to install and remove. I wash it carefully, by applying shampoo just beneath the tapes, not on them. I deep condition every wash but avoid the tapes. I only wear tapes/skin wefts for 4 weeks as I must do my roots! They grow out great and they're pretty undetectable. You must be patient when removing tapes. I spray on Goo Gone and then exercise for an hour, then I spray more on and slowly work them out of my hair. They pretty much slip out! Very little cleanup (unless you mix with glue). HTH!
