QuoteReplyTopic: Hair Falling Out...What Do I Do? Posted: March 31 2008 at 12:56pm
Hey, everyone
I posted a while ago about my hair being dyed too dark by my sister. I went to the salon and she stripped it, then dyed it and it was almost the same color I went in with. They agreed to try and fix it for me.
I went back 3 weeks later and she used a different product than the first time to strip my hair. The first time she used it, she used a color removal, and the second was a color-whip...I dunno what that means, but basically she said with the color whip, whatever color it came up, it came up. And we'd just have to see if she could take some of the color out. But that we wouldn't dye it after it was stripped.
Well, I went in and she applied the color-whip to my dry hair. I sat under the dryer for about 10 minutes and then she took a strand and wiped some of the stuff off of it. But none of it was coming off on the towel, even when she sprayed water on it. So long story short, this happened a bunch of times. I wound up sitting under the heater for a good 40 minutes. She finally washed it out and she said that my hair was really dry and she had to condition it a lot. I mean, gosh...you had me sit with this stuff on for 40 minutes under a dryer, what do you expect.
Well when it was all done, I didn't mind the color. It was definitely lighter, and redder..which was what I wanted. It definitely wasn't anything close to the color I originally wanted, but I was relieved that it was at least lighter. She told me to wait a month before even thinking about touching it, and to condition it a lot.
I notice that when I take a shower, I'm losing a lot of hair. I go a few days in between washing my hair, so I know that has something to do with it too. I notice that if I wait a few days in between washing, it seems like I'm losing more hair when I finally do wash. But I'm getting a little worried. :( How much is normal to lose in the shower? When I'm out of the shower I'll pull on it gently to see how much is coming out, and it's usually just a strand or two here and there. But in the shower when I'm washing it, it seems like a lot. I'm not sure if I'm just paranoid and looking for that, or if it's legitimate. The most recent color strip happened a week ago or longer so if I was going to lose my hair in clumps, wouldn't that have already happened? I'm a little worried.
She never used bleach on my hair and it's not mushy or anything. But we did strip it twice within 3 weeks of each other. I'm definitely not going to do anything to it anytime soon, but I'd like to know what you guys think. Do you think the hair loss is something to be concerned about? I don't really notice it unless I'm showering.
My hair isn't *terrible* or anything. But it definitely is dryer so I guess it's just fried. And I know that once it's damaged, it's damaged. But I also know there are some things you can do to at least improve the way it looks/feels. Deep conditioners, anything like that. I'm so lost when it comes to this stuff, and there's so much out there. Can you guys give me some suggestions? I try to find stuff but I get conflicting opinions and I'm so lost. I don't want to do the wrong thing and risk damaging it more.
Thank you so much! :)

Hi, What a time of it you have been having, poor you and your poor hair. Give your hair a break from colour for at least 6 months. The only thing you can do is deep conditioning treatments 1 a week. Apply a good conditioner to wet hair wrap a towel on the head and leave for as long as possible anything up to 30 mins. Possibly all your hair has been through is causing this problem, but please do not worry about it, it will recover over time and a good few trims. Hear is the basic information about hair growth etc.
We each have about 100 000 hairs on the scalp
It is normal to lose 50100 hairs from the head each day
Each hair on the head grows for about 5 years before being shed
Eyebrow hairs grow for only 10 weeks
Scalp hair grows at a rate of about 1 cm (just under half an inch) a month
I personally like the Aussie 3 min miracle conditioner, I don't know if you have heard of it. You can buy this in most drugstores. Apply it to your hair every day, but once a week apply it to your hair and wrap a towel over your head to keep heat in, and leave on for 30 mins and give your hair a good rinse. If you use hot irons (straighteners as we call them in the UK) Always apply a heat protector, even when you blow drying your hair. All this will help to protect your hair.
I meant to add in my last post some medication can cause your hair to fall out and also pregnancy.

get redken strength products....my hair was falling out and that stopped it pronto.....i was able to get my hands on the treatment strength and the ph phix...you could get it off ebay...but they have the shampoo and other products in strength that will help your hair....you just had too much done to your hair and it is breaking off. good luck and this stuff should work for you.
I don't know what she used to strip your hair, but some things are actually not that bad for it. Color Fix is low peroxide, so while its a little damaging, its really not that bad.
It does sound like you have more hair loss due to whatever she did though, and that is normal. Its true that you may be losing more during the shower, especially if you wear you hair in styles that trap in any hairs that fall out throughout the day, (ponytails etc.) you'd just see them all at once in the shower. You will probably be alright though. I used to do some harsh stuff to mine (lightened it to platinum for years) and it was falling out a good bit, but even though I knew I was losing tons, it was never noticeable to anyone else. Not putting more chemicals in it is a good idea, but try not to stress about the loss either (stress can cause hair loss).
I would use heavy silicone products. Pantene used to be my old standby, but there are tons of things out there these days full of cones (anything in the ingredients ending in "cone" or "one"). The conflicting info you may have heard may be whether to cone or not to cone? If your hair is damaged by chemicals, cones really do wonders to help it feel smooth again. They can build up, and that can cause breakage, but not for a long time. Six months to a year. Normally you would clarify them off once in awhile with a clarifying shampoo to prevent breakage, but this will be very drying to your hair and likely ruin your dye job. It also depends how long your hair is, if your hair is bra strap length or shorter, I just wouldn't even worry about the cone buildup issue and just use them. Any damage from that will get cut off before its a real problem.

It's probably just breaking off, there isn't anything you can do about that. Conditoning it will help make it seem healthier but it'll never go back to the way it was before.... it totally sucks when this happens!
Dear Ilovebryce ,Diva stabilizer will rebuild your hair up to 95% it is a hair treatment and rebuilder. The other products in the Diva line wil infuse your hair with much needed moisture. The stabilizer however will stop shedding in its tracks guaranteed ,www.divabycindy.net

How about a good trim? One or two inches at least should be helpful. Then, leave your hair alone for awhile and deep condition like the others suggested. I've had my hair ruined before too (too much coloring/bleaching/processing)and it just needs to grow out, unfortunately.
I wouldn't go back to that hairdresser. There are much gentler products and color removal methods. I don't know what she used or why you were under the drier for 40 minutes but it doesn't sound good to me.

Good advice from the above posters. I wanted to add that high stress can lead to hair loss. Sounds like you were/are a bit stressed from your hair trauma (yes, I'm serious!). Also, you just might be going through your regular shedding interval/phase. It could be breaking as well --- you really should go with one-a-week protein treatments to strengthen your hair either way. Follow them up with moisturizers and you will see a difference after awhile.
