Has anyone experienced major damage with sew in extensions?  I figured this would be the better method for me since I feel anything with glue or rings would damage it more.  Any opinions would be great!

This is the ONLY method I've ever worn and I've had NOTHING but good luck with it.. No damage, and nothing but healthy hair when I take it down.. As with any method, finding the right stylist is the key to success..

you will not experience damage if the sew in is done correctly...you need to make sure whoever is installing it is experienced with your particular type of hair and knows not to braid too tight (too tight tension can lead to hairloss)...

i knew of a young lady who had someone install tracks in her hair..she had fine hair and the person installing it braided it soo tight that it was hurting and the area was inflammed...when the lady took the track out she had a scab....

so yes it can be damaging if someone does not know what they're doing but if done correctly it is one of the safest and healthiest methods for your hair

Thanks so much ladies for the replies.  One of my braids seem a little to tight but other than that my scalp does not hurt.  It just itches which I'm guessing is pretty normal??  Hopefully that doesn't lead to hair loss - well the fact that one of my braids is a little uncomfortable.  I get so paranoid that I want to just take them off since I'm so scared of tons of hair loss!!

it's normal for it to itch..and its normal to feel a little "tightness" but not pain...you can try an anti itch braid spray or witch hazel to calm the itchies....you also might want to have a bobby pin handy to really get to the itch...lollll but if you have tracks installed it might be a little easier to get to the itch (as opposed to full head sew in in which us ladies usually pat...pat...pat our weaves...lolll)

but if there's swelling or bumps appear then take it outtttt

but from what you've wrote it seems you'll be fine :)

MzKoKoNY LOL I was cracking up cause I find myself slapping my head and padding it down LOL.  HAHAHAHA - it feels good but I gotta take it easy I go overboard.  I just got the hair extensions on Sunday - so I'll inspect it in a few days to see how my scalp is doing.  Is it normal for it to be a little red?  Hopefully my hair doesn't fall out or I start balding when I take them out.  I plan on leaving them in until they grow out - anywhere from 2 - 4 months - is the norm?

Thanks Diva - where would I find that product?  I need some relief - I wish I can take them off and scratch and scratch some more and then put them back on lol

you know i was singing beyonce's song as i wrote that...pat your weave ladies..pat pat...pat your weave ladies...roflll

ummn no it's not normal for it to be red..if there's redness..its too tight....but if the tightness subsides in a few days you should be ok..if not...go back to your stylist...just continue to monitor it closely..because losing your hair on the count of a weave and having to be dependent on a weave is nottt a good thing...

Well thats a little scary lol.  I just got the extensions on Sunday.  I can't see some of my hair cause the wefts are covering my scalp but the one briad I can see - around it looks pinkish but head doesn't feel to tight - only a few of them and of course the itching.  do you know of anyone having a lot of hair loss in a short period of time?  My hair is some what course and I plan on keeping it on as long as it stays put and then i'll take it off - 2 - 4 months.  What technique do you do - if you use extensions?  Thanks so much - you've been helpful as well as some laughter with the beyonce and tapping the hair weave lol.  I found myself doing it a minute ago in my cube at work.

girl..do i wear extensions??? i'm not only the president..i'm also a client (lawd i amm soo dating myself with that commercial quote...lol)

i do quite a few methods of weaves and extensions...as far as keeping them in for 2 to 4 months..that really depends on the method and how fast your hair grows..as the hair grows the tracks will move farther and farther away from the scalp and with everyday grooming the threads might loosen up depending on how rough you are with styling your hair...i tend to keep my sew-ins in for a month to 2 tops because i like a fresh look and i wear full head weaves and i just like switching things up..but i've had clients who have had theirs in for 3-4 months

hairloss is hard to detect until you actually take out the tracks..hair naturally sheds 40-150 strands a day so when you take down its normal to see some hair...but excessive amounts and patches are a whole different story

the only method that i do see hair loss is with glue...be it the black stuff or liquid gold...i don't care for glue-ins at all unless its for a short period of time 2 weeks tops or on a stocking cap (where the tracks are glued on a stocking cap and works like wig)

but i'll give you a horror story with a happy ending: my mom was going to a previous stylist and she had the stocking cap weave done..the stylist did it incorrectly and as a result the glue ate away at her hair and she had complete hair loss around her edges and in the crown...so she turned to me...her hair was long and lifeless...so we started over..i gave her a good trim..some treatments geared at hairloss and we did sew-ins back to back for a year with treatments and trims in between to get rid of the dead hair gradually..and i'm happy to report her edges have fully grown in..her hair is thick and soo healthy to the sight and touch that i was able to give her a full sew in with edges out and relaxed the hair and she's sooooo happy it's like she has a new lease on life...

I LOVE this product.. Extensions Plus sells her products (you'll have to call them to order it.. if you live here in L.A., you can go to their store and pick it up) Otherwise, you can order direct from Kim Kimble's website: http://www.kimblehaircare.com/

I don't understand why people would do glue on extensions.  The word "glue" would even scare me.  I could never spend that much money especially not on glue.  Don't get me wrong I think that any hair extension method can be done well without no damage but the glue - noooo way.  Are you located in NY?  I'm in NJ.  I plan on leaving my weave on for as long as I can until the growth starts then I would like to have my hair grow - maybe I can come to you.  Let me know.  your mom's happy ending gave me inspiration lol.

thanks Diva for the information - i will check it out!

There are a TON of ladies on this forum who do bonded extensions very successfully with NO DAMAGE to their natural hair.. So I think that like any method it's all about proper installation and proper removal..

DIVA: sorry bout ya situation but to have the royal DIVA in my chair..i must sound the trumpets...lollll...yes i'm in the bronx (and why am i nervous....lol)

Karissa: glue is ok for a temporary thing like wanting extra length for a wedding or something but there are people who dont want to pay to have their hair done or want something flat (which there are other options) and get the glue and IMO it's nothing but trouble to have caustic chemicals coming into contact with your strands especially if the hair isn't healthy...i see soo many girls getting the glue and crying when their hair is coming out in clumps...

but any method can be damaging if not done/maintained properly

yes I am in NY (bout 1/2 hour from Newark which i go to every sunday)...let me know what you wanna do and when you wanna do it and we can make it happen

Tongue Welcome MzKoKo! Nice to have you here....I lurk at BHM! No, you don't know me.LOL

I had no idea glue could 'eat' hair! I know exactly what people are saying when they talk about a fear of glue and loss of hair. BUT, I wear tape/liquid gold installs and I must say, it is really helping me to get my hair back healthy. The advantages of it are: even pressure on the scalp since the hair is sitting at the part line and is not too heavy; easy to install; easy to wear (rarely uncomfortable pulling or heaviness for me) and easy to remove (if you're patient!). I guess what I find is that if you remove it gently, the wefts come off without damaging your own hair and the ends or shaft of the hair is not compromised. I can go up pretty high on the head, thus covering my own hair and protecting it from styling. Very similar to sew-in without the braiding, actually.

OK, just had to throw this in!!! LOL
Love clip-ins and tape!

hey fake..thanks for the welcome...and girl..come out the bushes....no need to lurk...lollll

when i talk about glue causing damage...i'm talking about the black glue that a lot of ladies use for bonding....i've done tracks on clients using liquid gold (hate the smell)...but what i find is that if you're not big on taking care of the hair and think that the extensions will take care of themselves or wear them back to back with not so much as a breather in between then yes glue can cause damage as I have seen this firsthand...

as far as comfort and how high tracks can go this all in the skill of the person putting them in and the texture of the person's hair...i had a client with really fine hair that we liquid golded so we could only go up to the crown area..some with more density can go further up..same with a sew in..and there are methods of sew-ins without braiding if a person is concerned about bulkiness or discomfort of braiding

but my own personal preference..i do not like glue and if someone is installing hair for protective/growth there are other options
