Smile This is my beautiful 13 year old daughter. This is her hair, with product, she uses Brazilian oil and an anti frizz mouse to achieve this look.  She is no longer relaxing her hair.  Her hair, without product is pretty frizzy, she can get a full blown Afro without product!.  She is mixed race, her dad is black, I am white.   Her hair is EXTREMELY thick, she has TONS of it! But, the individual strands or hair are fine.

I put extensions in her hair, right after we took this photo. BAD! i I went to the beauty supply and bought Milky Way Italian Wave and sewed in 4 rows. (I can cornrow) The  hair on the wefts  is so thin, 4 closely placed rows barely made a difference. It just looks silly!  The color and curl are a great match, but the hair is crap, IMHO.

We are trying to achieve length, not  volume! LOL !

I have been reading posts and archives here for days! I am a neat freak, I like the symmetry of the individual strands in even rows. However, with this much hair, is a weft faster?

I am good with hair, parting, braiding, coloring, highlighting, and I have very good hand coordination, so I am brave enough to try something new
Now the ???'s

1) So much hair! I'm thinking I will not want to do rows above her ear line, will that add too much bulk? If I do a few rows (maybe 2), on the crown, I imagine I would space the strands farther apart

2) She takes great care of her hair, but she is 13! She is going to want to swim, put it in a pony tail, or a loose bun. Swimming a problem? I would like the extensions to last for 8-12 weeks, as I know it's going to take some time putting them in.

3) I know metal rings will drive her crazy, I watched every demonstration video on the web, it comes down to...shrink thingies, with strands, cold fusion, hot fusion, or tape? LOL Guess that's what everyone wants to know!!  Which method would give her the length, least amount of volume, and stay in well?

4) What brand do you recommend?

Thanks to all!

Hi Lv4noregrts! Your daughter is beautiful! I am almost the same skin colour as your daughter -- I am Caribbean and both my parents are mixed. My hair is not as thick as your daughter's, especially now that I bleach it! haha.

I will likely not be of huge help to you as I am not a pro and haven't been wearing extensions for more than 2 years. I will say that with thick hair it is easier and less time consuming to sew in or tape/glue in wefts. if you can cornrow (right on!), then I say stick with that and sew in better hair, for eg. virgin indian wavy or curly hair. The thicker the hair, the more wefts you will have to put in, but remember, you can double or triple wefts on one track. You will have to put in a LOT of individuals to match your daughter's hair. You could also try tape/glue --- which is what I use, along with clip-ins. The tape is very easy. It is pretty durable with swimming and activities (I workout every day) and can be worn for nearly two months.

Hopefully, someone more knowledgeable will chime in, but I just wanted to say hi and put in my two cents. I hope you find what you're looking for!!!
Love clip-ins and tape!

Thanks for your input fakeizme!

I'm assuming, a better quality of wefts will produce a much better result. Even doubled, mine are way too thin.

Hey! thanks for joining! Let me add my two cents.

I have extremely thick hair! so I can relate. like Fakizme said you need to add a lot more wefts. Have you thought of a full sew in? it would reduce the bulk. You could leave the horseshoe left out and edges left out so she could wear a pony tail too?

Also I would recommend using virgin hair, not beauty supply hair. Why the tangling and shedding are a huge problem with hair thats not virgin. These days you could find virgin hair thats reasonably priced, and it lasts a long time! Virgin hair is resilient against swimming, if you was it after and condition.

I hope I helped?Smile

dont hesitate to ask more questions!

Thanks, to both of you!

I just spent a LONG time taking out the wefts I put in last week! The thread matched her hair, so closely, it took forever to get them out without catching her hair! Her hair had snarled around the wefts and stitches.

A full sew in might  just be too much torture for her, and me! That would be a LOT of braiding and sewing!

Would the tape/glue method, using human hair wefts, speed the process?
Ease the removal?
Cause minimal damage?

I really want to do this for her. She has been home, doing 8th grade on the Internet, due to health issues. She is a bit anxious about going  to school (high school) in the fall. She really wants to feel confident and have a "new, amazing look" for H.S.! Of course, she doesn't believe MOM, that she is amazing just the way she is! If this makes her feel better, more confident, I'm willing!

Thanks!

Aww thats so sweet of you! your a good mommy!

Well to be honest I use the glue in method, but only when I am doing something for a special occasion/performance. You dont want the glue in for too long, cos taking it out is just as time consuming if not more! The damage with glue could be really bad, if patience is not used.

You could try glueing a few tracks for a weekend and see.

Have you considered clip ins?

I have considered clip ins, but I don't know how long they will last?  I'd like them to last a month, minimum.

Maybe I should look at the micro beads or the shrinky things? Her hair is fine, but textured...they will probably not slip out.

Because she no longer has her relaxed, it tends to snarl near the roots. Any suggestions?

Thanks!

I dont have much knowledge on the micro beads or "shrinky things" lol but many on this board do, I hope someone can chime in. What about the malaysian technique? Many posts on you tube showing how to do it. I'll keep thinking.

Yeah, you're a 'cool' Mama!!! Tongue

I don't know much about shrinkies/rings, but I've heard some good things about them & they sound easy enough to do.

First I will say that I wear the tape/glue method --- Love it! It's easy to put and take out (if you are patient). If you buy a few different removers, like 99% alcohol, pure acetone, Goo Gone or C-22 --- you can see what works best for your daughter. I don't have any damage from it and I've been wearing it since Fall 2007. I also throw in clip-ins on the bottom and they are the longest lasting (I think) of any method. The hair lasts forever and the clips are pretty strong.
Love clip-ins and tape!

Your daughter is very pretty and I love her skin tone and hair color. SHe would look awesome with Mariah Carey's color... probably a Color 27 Honey Blond.  Uhm... Maybe save the hair color until she's a bit older. No need to go into such maintenance now. Wink
Hey Fakeizme... have you ever tried that color? It sounds like it would be great on you also.Wink
I'm not an expert but I would think if you could find some way to do a sew in for your daughter, it might be a better option. At her age, she doesn't want to mess with clip ins and she would be mortified if the glue or tape didn't hold up when she is swimming or hanging with friends.
