hi everyone,
im new here and don't have a redken shades book. i know some do from reading posts and was hoping for some help.
i've been coloring my own hair now for 2 years since my hubby became a teacher and we became poor. currently i am a redken color fusion 5BC with a 20 developer when roots grow in and i update with shades EQ 1/2 05C - 1/2 06C . i am in the warm category.
i want to go lighter for summer i would love a caramel/honey color.
so my question is 2 part: how do i lighten my hair from where it is to where i want it to be? i would like to go possibly 2 levels lighter. do i up the volume in my developer as well?
or should i just put in caramel hightlights and if so, what color would you suggest? also, are there any tips for doing your own high/low lights. tricks/tools as i would love to venture into this realm but not sure how to.
thanks so much beauty community!

Thanks for thinking so highly of me! I'm not sure I can really help though. I'm not a pro, I don't have the shades book, and I'm not familar with what you are doing your roots with.
What I can tell you is I looked up your 5BC shade and I see its a reddish brown. You will do best to lift it out if you want to go whole-head lighter, since color can't lift color. You would have to use color fix until your hair is yellow (you may have to use it more than once to achieve this), then dye over it with a blonde dye that has a violet base. (If you only lift it to orange with the colorfix, that won't work, you'd need something else and lifting it to yellow will be better.). Make sure to test strand everything to avoid any mistakes!
You also may need to do a different procedure to get your roots to lift enough when its time to do your roots, depending how dark your natural color is, it may require bleach. If your natural color is dark blonde or lighter, you won't need bleach.
If you just want caramel highlights over the top, I'm really not the best person to ask about available kits.

Hi, I think Susan's advice is great. You can go several ways with this. You can remove the colour and then go for a Level 7 Redken shade (I don't have a Shades book either!). You could gradually lighten up by using a high volume of peroxide/colour next time you colour, so each time your roots are a bit lighter. Or, you could do highlights with bleach (easier), then tone over with a honey colour. I would say honey caramel would be about a level 8. You should bleach past that (Level 9) and then tone down to an 8 with a neutral blonde colour. Highlights are a great way to start as you can see if you like the colour first, then gradually add more and more.
