QuoteReplyTopic: I NEED HELP!!! Posted: May 19 2008 at 3:33pm
Hi - I have been having my hair weaved for years, but now I can't afford it. I want to get closer to my natural haircolor (medium brown) by doing it myself. Last time I tried that my roots were kind of orange. Any suggestions??? I also have some gray coming in all of a sudden...YIKES!
One quick fix is to go over orange roots on brown hair again with a brown shade that has a green base (use a shade of brown 2 shades lighter than you want to end up with). If you use a lighter brown shade to do that, and only do the roots, it may even it out, but be sure to test strand that to make sure the roots and ends don't come out drastically different shades of brown...you may want to do the roots, then pull it through the ends for the last few minutes or something like that...you can try different test strands to see what works best.
The same trick would work if you used an ash brown and got green roots or hair instead of orange, you can go over the roots again with a lighter brown that has an orange base to counter that.
Another tip, your roots process faster because of the heat from your head...this also can help them turn orange. You may want to apply it to your roots last so its not on them as long.

Oh, that's great advice Susan! I agree about covering with a green-based brown shade --- easiest way to fix it.
Also, next time use a deposit-only colour, so your roots won't lift (as much). Remember, all hair lightens with warmth, so your roots will always look pretty brassy if you don't compensate with an ash tone. Good luck!
