QuoteReplyTopic: Clipper lengths Posted: May 28 2008 at 1:01pm
Just a funny question here: does anyone know of a website or have a picture reference of how long *visually* the standard grades 1-8 leave hair? I can easily estimate a length, but I find it hard to translate that to hair. For example I can know how wide half an inch is looking at a reel of ribbon (I work in a craft shop...), but if I read thats how long the nape of a pob was it seems insanely short. Or trying to work out what a particular grade would look like on my fiance, if I was avoiding any see-throughness. What point does that become an issue? I was just wondering if there was a source that showed these lengths, maybe a manufacturer would display it? I remember seeing something similar sometime ago but can't for the life of me remember where. Cheers in advance for any help
There are a couple things to consider. Grades 1 to 8 represent what fraction of an inch the guard is. Grade 1 is 1/8th inch, 2 is 1/4th inch and so on up to grade 8 for one inch. The type of clipper also can make a big difference. Typically, unless the clippers are "barbershop" quality (or zero overlap), you can add 1/8th of an inch to each guard. For how short to go without seeing through, that also depends on hair color and thickness. You can always start with an 8 guard, and work your way down. I have medium texture hair, and I don't "see through" to my scalp until I go shorter than 1/4th of an inch, or a #2 guard. I would look at www.wahl.com or www.oster.com. Both websites can be very helpful.

Thanks for the help ssj. I understand the fractionsy thing, but I find it hard to relate it to a head! I don't know why. I'm quite sure I know a lot more about very long hair than very short though. I liked how the oster link showed kitcheny stuff first. I thought it was the wrong company at first haha
I would use 3mm pre grade number. so the number 3 guard is 9mm. It's a little more accurate than using 1/*ths.
Also if you want a short nape on a bob, especially and inverted bob the 1/2 inch is a very nice length.
Are you thinking of taking the plunge? If so post some before and after pictures please as we all love seeing a great makeover. If you are worried about showing your face then you can just blur that part of the picture.
