QuoteReplyTopic: Way too blonde Posted: July 07 2008 at 4:13pm
I have natural medium brown hair but have gotten highlights for years. My first stylist would put a few different colors in, but the one I go to now is only doing one. I wanted to be blonder, but instead of there being just highlights, it is all blonde. You can't even see any brown on the top. This is too blonde for me and I don't know how i should fix it. I can't afford to go back. Can I just color right over it? What kind should i get? I don't want to go back to the full brown, but I want to be darker than I am now. Thanks!

You have the right to complain to your colorist that did your hair at the salon and demand them to fix your color. The best step to do this is by adding lowlights that's a level or two darker than your current highlights. I don't recommend you to do this by yourself. First check with the salon and they shouldn't charge you for it because you weren't too thrilled with the results.
I did talk to her but she will not fix it for free and I can't go to anybody else. Is there anything I can do by just coloring over it with Natural Instincts or something like that? Thanks.
I would also like to start doing this from home rather than getting it colored all of the time at the salon, so I need something that I am able to do.

To go back to your natural colour and the fact that you have blonde hi lighted hair, you will need to pre pigment the blonde, otherwise any colour you put on your hair will just slide right back off. I would recommend you use a coloured mousse or a semi in a natural brown, dry your hair, then apply your target shade over this. You will have some fading the first time, each time you apply the colour the less it will fade.
Can I just add, without sounding cheeky, lol. Be sure you want an all over colour, as I have had a few clients into the salon with same hair as you, and wanting to go back to there natural colour then a few weeks down the line wanting it all hi lighted again. The damage that this causes to the hair is terrible, so much so I have said to my client if she wants to go back to all over colour, I will refuse to do it, as I know she will change her mind again. So aims be sure its what you want, hunnie.
Thanks Karen. What I was wanting to do is get darker than what I am now. I don't want to go back to my natural color, but I would like to be a bit darker. Then I was wanting to add some highlights myself. Would that still be bad for my hair? It's not like my hair is really bad looking but it is too light for me. I don't mind gradually going darker either, if that is an option. Is it? Could I just add darker highlights or anything else? Also, what do you mean by pre pigment, where would I get this?

You can have low lights in a dark shade to break up the blonde you have, if you can do this yourself, it is just like adding hi lights, but instead your applying a darker colour.
As for pre pigmenting this is basically stain any blonde hair with a coloured mousse or semi colour to avoid fading, and its adding back pigment that bleach and hi lighting takes out of the hair. You only need to do this aims if you are aiming for an all over colour.
Karen
PS, pre-pigment is basically the same as a filler, I think the term is in the US, both the same thing, lol.

Once again, Karen is bang on!
I would thoroughly suggest putting in some lowlights yourself, but be prepared for them to fade; they always do. You can use the Natural Instincts. Do as Karen suggests and apply a semi-permanent or colour mousse on it in a golden shade to prepare the hair for the darker colour. Take those hairs you've decided to darken and separate them and wrap foil around them (really well).
When it's time to rinse, rinse all of the foils once at a time under low water pressure, so the colour doesn't run into your blonde (it's not as hard as it sounds!). You can do this!
Okay, so I do not need to do the semi-permanent before doing the lowlights, right? What about the new regrowth that will be much darker than the rest of my hair. Do you think that by me just adding the highlights would still make it work or would there be a big difference in color? Thanks again!

As long as you are adding low lights (darker colour) and hi lights together it will look lovely, this will break up the blonde you already have so when applying foils when you are doing a blonde hi light only apply bleach to the root only, wrap the foil then apply your darker shade to another foils, only take it through the whole section of that foil, I hope that makes sense to you.
Will you manage to do this yourself, as its a bit tricky to try and do yourself, hunnie.
Thanks Karen. I do understand what you mean. I think before I add the lowlights, I will add the highlights to my root, this way I can make sure I can do it. Do you have any tips on what brand I should use?

Aims, when I used to do my highlights, I would use Revlon Frost & Glow from the drugstore. It comes up really well and not brassy.
Also, when I used to do my highlight touchups like you're going to do, I would just wrap a little piece of tin foil around the roots where I applied the bleach. It's a lot easier than using a full strip of foil and having to fold it up. Other good bleaches, if you have access to them, are Wella Wellite Cream Bleach, Clairol 7th Stage and Wella Blondor.
Love clip-ins and tape!
