Confused I'm a bit frustrated, I've been reading about color for months as i'm on a quest to avoid the $100+ it's been costing me to have my hair foiled at the salon by doing it myself.  I felt pretty confident on what I learned from this site and all my Q's that many of you answered.  I buckled down and bought the same Goldwell developer that my hairdresser used topchic 30v.  I know she has used a 10 series in the past for color (my natural color is about a 7) so I bought topchic 10P and 10A as my hair tends to pull orange. (Although my hair stylist never used toner.) I mixed up half 10P and half developer and did a foiled test strip and checked it after 30 minutes but didn't see any change so I left it on a total of 45 minutes with no heat.  I shampooed, rinsed and dried and couldn't tell a difference!  Sooo I tried it again at the front of my hair on 4 pieces, 2 with 10P and 2 with 10A.  Processed the same, no change at 30 minutes so I added heat and again the color was on my hair for a total of 45 minutes. Shampooed, rinsed and dried.  It did lighten slightly (maybe an 8) but has an orange tint which surprised me since I used 10A. But it's so little change in color that I don't even notice it. The color was applied only to my uncolored regrowth.  The current grown out highlights are at least a level 10 or close to platinum which is what I was aiming for or.  I bought my color and developer of ebay and even though the auction said the color and 30V was sealed the 30V and 10A was not. The 30V had a sealed cap on it that was sealed but you could unscrew the cap and access the color without a seal. Is it possible that the color is too old? I also used regular kitchen foil on my hair.  I guess I'm not sure why it pulled orange would using a little10V help? and why it didn't lighten more.  Can someone give me some suggestions on what I'm doing wrong.  Do I need to use a blonding cream?  Thank you so much for everything.

Hi Sackpac,

If you have coloured your hair a few times, then the only thing that will lift the colour from your hair is bleach, as you are a level 7.

As for as the screw top from the colour you used, it should still have worked. The way to tell if a colour is off, if the whole tube is black in colour, meaning air has got into it or its past the 5 year life expectancy.

You could use the bleach to lift the colour then apply the  goldwell colours you have after the bleach, depending on the results after bleaching, however you may have to use a hi lift to even out your colour.I am not too sure on Goldwells if they have a hi lift.

I hope this has helped a little.

Karen.

PS, wither your using kitchen foil, or salon foil will not have made any difference.

Thanks for the reply-I applied the color to my new growth which has not been colored.  This is what my stylist has done in the past, then she processed it for 30-45 minutes then shampooed and dried and that was it.  It was just a single process and it lightened it to about a 10.  It looked great and had no orange.

If I foiled with bleach how do I color those same pieces with the goldwell color?(I don't want to bleach my entire head.  Also, I thought 10 series in Goldwell was a high lift but I could be wrong.  Anyway sorry for all the Q's and thanks for your help.

Hey Sackpack; good for you doing it on your own! Now, we just have to figure out what you need to do!

I just wanted to confirm that the 10A and 10P are permanent colours and not toners? If they are colours, I would try them with double 30 volume; say 2 ounces colour to 4 ounces peroxide. This will give you highlift action. Also, keep the colour on for the full 45 minutes -- you need the full time for list and deposit. Now, if what you bought are toners, then you will need to bleach and then deposit those colours on the pre-lightened hair. Also, it sometimes helps to be in a warm area of the house or briefly blast it with a blowdryer with a plastic bag over it.
Love clip-ins and tape!

Hey fakeizme, it's the Topchic permanent hair color that comes in the black canister.  I will go ahead and double the peroxide and see what happens.

Also, if I need a toner, do I just put the toner on all my hair after I foil and just leave it on for a few minutes or do I need to mix the toner with more developer before I put it on?

Regarding the foiling process, is there an easier way-I'm not sure I can get the foils in the back of my hair.  I would love to do the bayalage but it sounds like you need like a 100% developer.  Would you or anyone else recommend the cap method or have any other ideas?  If I do foil, I know it will take a while, what do I do when I'm still foiling after 45minutes from the first foil I put in?  Can my hair process for longer than 45 min. or does it stop coloring my hair at some point.  Thanks for all your help, you're the one that helped me last month as well-I appreciate it!

I think you needed 40 volume developer for that much lift, that is likely why its not working the first time.  Maybe your old colorist was using a high lift  dye with her 30 volume.  I think it might have gone orangy because of the 10A.  This is a pale ash blonde and the base color is usually violet for ash shades that light.  You need a blue based color to prevent orange when lifting.  I'm not saying its not blue for sure, I don't know about that company, I'm just saying maybe its not.

After 45 min, your dye has done about all its going to do.  I wouldn't leave it on longer because you likely won't get any more change, but you may get extra damage.  Maybe time your head in sections, like say you've done the front pretty quickly, set a timer before you start doing the back and keep in mind what you did when.  If you bend your head over the sink and are very careful, you could wash out the front while you're still in the process of the back (just don't get the back wet at all).  I think you will get faster with practice and this won't be a problem forever.

Hey Sack; the double 30 should push it a bit, but Susan may have a point in suggesting double 40.

In terms of toner, it depends on whether it's an oxidative toner (needs peroxide) or whether it is semi (no peroxide needed). Make sure you read the instructions or it -- the semis are easier and you would just smother your hair all over with it and let it do it's thing.

You could use a cap -- it might be easier for you to do the back, however it's still requiring you to pull hair from the back of your head! If you want to do it properly, I would get another mirror so you can see the back of your head. Also, get a whole bunch of clips/butterfly clips so you can clip hair out of the way to work on slices/sections. Go slowly. Don't worry about timing. It's a colour, so it stops after about 50 mins and won't keep processing or damaging your hair -- bleach is different. Depending on where you want the highlights lighter --- start there, so it has time to lift the full time.

Can't wait to hear how it goes!Tongue

Love clip-ins and tape!

Hi, thanks for all the info, I tried the double volume on different strands for 45 minutes and it wasn't much lighter than with the 50/50. I'm a bit afraid of what the 40 vol may do to my hair.  I have a large 32 oz of Goldwell 30 vol. as that is what my hair dresser used on my hair about 6 months ago. I know she used a 10 level-probably ash.  I have Goldwell 10A and 10P.  I don't know much about blonding creams but was wondering if it would work with above formulation?  Is the blonding cream for Goldwell just called blonding cream or something else and does it come in different levels of color and different tones?  I know of something called Goldwell Oxycur Platin, is this the BC or is it a bleach? The color I'm going for is in the below link, top picture.  My natural color is the darker blond strips and I'm trying to foil the lightest blonde in the picture into my hair.

If I did need to go with 40 Vol. can I just get a small container of any brand at a local beauty supply? (Can you suggest a brand?)And do I add just the Goldwell 10a or a combination of 10a and 10P?  To avoid any damage do I deep condition before I color and weekly after(will the conditioner lift/strip the color?)
Sorry for all the Q's This is my 1st time and I thought I had it figured out but now I'm just really confused and don't want to mess up my hair.  Thank you all so much for your time.
