QuoteReplyTopic: Root touch-up... Posted: July 17 2008 at 12:34pm
Alright ladies. Its been six weeks since I colored and highlighted my hair. My hair is extremely strong and grows bizarrely fast. So now, I have about a quarter to half an inch of new growth I need to touch up.
My hair is naturally med to dark brown. I was blonde (actually had white hair when I was two) as a child, so I know I can continue to pull the color off. As I get older my hair gets darker.
Right now, my issue is that my stylist wants to touch my roots up with an ashy base color then throw hightlights on top of that. Now I have no problem with doing a base then doing the highlights. My problem is with the ash color. Ash based colors turn my hair grey. I'm not talking the good grey either. I'm talking that nasty grey color that has a touch of green to it. Anybody have any ideas for a good base color that will reduce the brassies and not have my hair turn grey/green? My hair is dyed a dark goldenish blond with lots of varying shades of highlights.
Thanks in advance.

If you are basing the knowledge that ash turns your hair green on something that happened many years ago, you may find that its not the case anymore. They stopped using green as a base in a lot of blonde colors, and its even pretty hard to find now. Now they use a blue base for ash and it doesn't pull green (but also doesn't counter the orange as well as green did - something that bugs me since mine always pulls mega orange, but hey).
I'd definitely test strand. It would be very unusual for some orange not to come out when you lift from dark brown to blonde, even if your hair doesn't have a hint of reddish tones in it. I really would try a blue based shade of blonde for your base color if I were you, but test strand either way for sure.

I'm assuming you mean the ash-based colour turned your mid-shaft and ends grey? There's no way (if you're lifting colour at roots) that your hair would go grey. There's so much underlying warm pigment at a Level 7/8 (where you would lift to) that even an ash blonde would not turn your roots ash. BUT, it would turn your other hair ash, especially if it's porous. In the future, your colourist, should only do your roots and not drag the colour through the rest of your hair. If she wants to refresh your ends, she would be using a warmer blonde deposit colour.
Hi. Try coloursplash! Hair Color Refresher. It's a top of the line product and it costs about $8.95 per bottle. It is perfect for touch up between salon visits.
