Hello!

I am new to this board and I love it! I grew up wearing my hair long-down to my bottom! I had my hair cut into a pixie in kindegarten because of an unfortunate incident with the scissors! By third grade my hair was back until junior high. I kept it to my bra strap until senior year and then cut it off completely (1"-3" layers)! I felt very good about it for a while and then started coloring it. I've colored it an auburn for several years (my natural color is blonde).

The point that I am slowly getting to is, has anyone else felt any strange compulsion to cut or color their hair? I know I've read many posts on other websites about becoming "addicted" to haircolor but I'm now 35 years old and tired of this feeling! I get bored with work or life in general and either head straight to the haircolor isle at the store or the nearest hairdresser! You would think that after SO MANY disasterous results I would learn but I haven't! Does anyone have any advice? Be kind, this is my first post.

You have to have a Stylist that you trust and a Salon that you like.

A stylist that will get to know you and help you NOT do things to your hair sometimes.

Frankly I love hangin at the Salon...Hey maybe you could get a job at a great Salon and you would be around the excitement of others getting things done sooooo much that you would get enough...

That's so true Sophie, sometimes they save us from ourselves. When I went for my haircut last Saturday, and told my long-time stylist I wanted three inches cut off (my hair was about bottom of bra strap length), she actually argued with me until she was quite certain that's what I really wanted. We even got out the ruler! She knows I usually want my hair as long as possible. I really value this in her. It pays to have someone who knows us, knows what we want.

I wanted ALL of the winter damage gone. We succeeded. Sometimes in my quest for length, I forget how wonderful it feels (and looks) to have a great cut! Thank goodness for my Linda!

Hey,

I sometimes get the urge to cut, especially since I'm growing out some annoying layers, grrrr, but I'm also saving length so I stick to my routine of leeting my stylist trim 1/2 of a cm every 3 or 4 months, eventually my layers will catch up with the rest, I just have to be patient

by the way: my goal is thigh length hair: first goal: bra-strap length, now: shoulder length

Hi T,

Welcome to HB! Yes, you will find many, many hair obsessed, compulsive people here...... In the past 8 years my hair has gone from bsl to above my ears, then back to bsl 3 times! It has been highlighted 3 different ways, colors have ranged fom j/lo blond streaked brown to auburn red to pitch black. It is hair....God didn't put any nerve endings in it because it is meant to be cut off when it becomes damaged - just like nails! Have fun with it!
The reason we all go straight to the hairdressers when we need a change is because your hair is ONLY thing on your body that you can change in one day! Yes, you can go to the gym.....that is more long term. HAIR IS NOW!!

Anyway - I repeat what everyone says above - befriend a good stylist and tell him/her yuor goals. They will keep you on track. My stylist talked me out of whacking mine off countless numbers of times. I was very greatful to her...but then ended up eventuallly sneaking off and cutting it - regretting it and feeling so bad for "cheating on her" I would wait a full 6 months before going to her!!

OK - enough of my psychotic experiences with hair.

jacqui

I am 46 and I mess with my hair all the time. I think part of it is because often I hate the style I get it cut in so I keep going back hoping to get a haircut that I can deal with better. I, too, love hanging at the salon and trying new colors although I have never ventured out of the blonde family.

I have very fine hair which has been a source of frustration since I was about four years old. I think I noticed in some other posts that you have fine hair as well. I think maybe some of the frustration with everything that it WON'T do is what makes some of us with this hair type constantly search for the perfect 'do or product that will make our lives easier.

But don't worry. You aren't abnormal or anything. I think you will enjoy this site.

I don't think it's a compulsion. It's just a part of being a girl/woman. We have the privillage to cut, grow, color, perm. curl etc...and it's all perfectly acceptable in society. Besides I think a little change or a lot of change keeps us from being bored.
Anyway just my thoughts.
