QuoteReplyTopic: going red - semi permanent vs. permanent Posted: October 17 2008 at 8:46pm
My natural color is between a level 6 & 7 neutral tone & my hair's virgin for about 6 inches - the remaining hair's been colored quite a few times but now matches my regrowth. I'm planning on going red & I want a super-vivid red-copper result. I've been told that it's a good idea to use semi-permanent first so that if I don't like the results I can go in & change the tone right away... but will red semi-permanent give me the brightness I want over my natural color? I don't want a natural looking red, I want it to be BAM bright. Thanks :)
Demi-Permanent Haircolor that is designed to lift the natural haircolor one to one and a half shades, that is applied over virgin hair that is within 1-2 levels of the artificial haircolor target should get the pop you want.
A true Semi-permanent will not give you the pop you want as the product is typically designed for color depositing only.
A Demi-permanent would be a better choice, however even if you did not like it the chances of you being able to so called change it right away are slim when it comes to a fresh red color.

I agree with Studio728..I was a vibrant redhead for many years. I tried them all: semi, demi and permanent.
The semi's just did not give as much as the permanent color. The color would wash out very quickly. I would stick with either a demi or permanent. There are many brands of bright reds, I recall using Clairol Torrids.
Clairol also has a color called 'reddest sunset red' which sounds like the type you want. It's a beautiful light copppery red, I used it for many years. It was bright but still natural-looking. Everone loved it. Just a suggestion.
I would not worry too much about the color not being bright enough. With your natural level, there should be anough warmth coming out in the lightening process to intensify the red color anyways. At least that's what happened with me :-)

I agree with the others above, semi wont give you that va voom your looking for. Just remember reds are the quickest to fade, but the hardest colour to remove totally out of the hair.
If I were you, a strand test first with demi or permanent colour first to see the results and if you like the colour, before applying it to your hair.
Good luck,
Karen.
PS, if you are looking for a fashion red, you will need to pre-lighten hair first.

Have u heard of Wella Color Charm?U can get it at Sally's.I love thier reds.I'd try that if I were u.They come in demi or peramant.I always change my hair color.Like every 4 weeks.I know ,people say it will fall out,but I don't agree.I don't bleach it alot.I that's only if u bleach it alot.I just add color usually.Plus, if u want to keep your red bright & pretty.U should try Artec color shampoo or cond.U can look them up online. They have all kinds of reds. They rock!!
