QuoteReplyTopic: Need help with selecting a hairstyle Posted: November 15 2008 at 3:53pm
Hi, im Kevin.
Im here today, because i would like some advice and hear peoples opinions on what hairstyle would best suit me.
If im honest im not that attractive, and my attractiveness varies from reasonably handsome to ugly depending on how well my hair is cut, and i would like too finally find my style so i can at least feel comfortable in my own skin, to let the person i know i can be shine out.
Some facts
I dye my hair, as im naturally auburn (ginger), but i hate it. I have currently went with a very dark brown in its place, near enough black. Ive tried varying the shades, sometimes it looks good lighter and some times it looks good darker, ultimately tho the deciding factor will also be the cut and style.
I do this about every 5 weeks, i realised this was damaging my hair, causing it too dry out very easily, but i now use a treseme shampoo thats for coloured hair and a treseme conditioner. I wash my hair roughly every 2 days, sometimes daily, depending on how much product ive used, because i cant get the style i want. My hair isnt in the best shape as it could be because of the excessive dyeing, but i really detest auburn or ginger hair. Darker hair gives me more confidence in myself. The conditioner helps alot in managing my hair, and its not as bad as it once was.
I use lots of hair products, think ive tried the lot. you name it ive probably tried it. I seem to be having best luck with a gel wax just now, and depending on the length of my hair, either the brylcream verison or the vo5.
My face shape i reckon is somewhere betweeen oblong, rectangular and maybe oval, to be honest i have no real idea. I have big ears and big ears, reasonbly sized nose, and a small mouth. I will show later.
My cut - i did for years go with a clippered cut, at the back and sides and short on top, but because my hair can grow soo thick soo fast (especially at the back and sides), it meant it was quite unmanagable at times. I now just get it cut by sissors (it also makes the dye last longer, and sometimes now i leave it for longer before dying again)
I have to getted it thinned out every cut, due to the excessive thickness very quickly. I vary from the shortish and longish messy sort of look. It really depends on the condition of the hair, It looks better with a slight length in it, when it has a nice volume and cut etc, but after a while it gets too long and bushy, then i have to go short again, and start over.
But im not really sure this style would best suit me, as it can be hit and miss. for example usually takes about 2/3 bad cuts to get a good one.
I have recently been thinking about going with the short slicked back style, which i may think suit me quite well, but im a lil scared to try it, as that style when it looks good, can look very good, but if its bad, can make you look very sleasy and creepy, which when you see me, i certainly dont need to add to my unattractiveness.
I have attached some photos.
If you can give me some advice, i would be most grateful.
thanks
* tried to add some photos, but wouldnt let me add, anyone know how i can get round this.

Hey Kevin,
Welcome to HairTalk. I will try to answer some of your questions. I have selected a few of your comments.
#1 - If you like your hair lighter colored you might experiment with a darker blonde shade. The only danger with that is that if you don't have professional help your hair being ginger probably has a lot of red and will pull red when you go lighter.
If you feel better with darker hair, dark blonde might be the solution you are searching for.
If money is an issue go to a cosmo school or call the better salons in your city and ask if they have model nights. On model nights the clients are charged either nothing or just a few bucks.
Some of the better Cosmo schools are Paul Mitchell and Toni & Guy. Go there and ask for their most advanced student who is good with color and ask them to take you lighter. Advise them that your hair may pull red.
If your hair is naturally ginger your skin tone might be too light for the dark brown/black hues.
#2 - Its great that you only wash every 2 days or so. This protects hair from getting dry. Depending on the hair color you use it may not be as bad for your hair as you think. Using a color maintaining shampoo and conditioner is good. You may want to invest in a stronger rinse out/leave-in conditioner which will add back more moisture.
#3 - Face shape does matter but it is even more important to consider your nose and ears. Since you mention you have larger ears you probably want to go with a hairstyle that covers your ears with some hair.
Keep in mind that if you go with a slicked back look you will be accentuating your ears since your hair will be flat to your head. You may not like that look if you want to minimize your ears.
#4 - The key to a great slicked look is NOT to use a wet gel but to use a lighter holding product such as a lighter cream or a light hairspray or even a paste that will hold dry and not wet. Wet gels will tend to look greasy if too much is applied.
A gel mousse might be light enough but you might experiment with lighter holding products.
#5 - It sounds like you know what hairstyles work for you and wearing it shorter on top with longer along the sides and back would help balance your ears. Any type of layering would also be great for controlling the fullness.
One option for getting less volume - unless you really want it - would be to use a relaxer like Rusk Anti-Curl #1 or #3.
You will need to check w/ a pro before using the Rusk but Rusk #2 is designed to be used with colored hair.
As far as posting photos, you should be able to cut and paste them directly into your post.
I am sure I haven't given you all the answers you need but at least those are some thoughts.
