Ya know the recommendation to section hair and twist to find the splits and cut those....well, I find that too difficult to do for many reasons.

Here's what I do:

Have my hair scissors with me as much as possible. Whenever I have a minute to relax or must wait for something, take out the scissors, grab some hair and look for splits. If I find some, draw a small section of hair around it between my fingers. Now I can see the entire ends of these hairs.

Not only do I cut off splits....but also hair ends that have a weird 90 degree (more or less) turn at the end, and hair ends that look like they have a white speck at the tip, also hair ends that are very wavy (obviously pulled/stretched).

Even if I only get a few, I feel as though I've accomplished a great deal. After doing this for a while, I notice that my hair is much easier to detangle/manage and looks a lot better.

How about you? What techniques work for you?

LOL! I do this all the time!!! I have scissors everywhere! I must have 10 pairs. And always a sharp pair of nail scissors in my purse. Any split end I spy, off it comes!

I tried to have this discussion when I first joined this board in March. The idea of cutting damage out of your hair sent chills down Uzma's spine. But I still do it!! Sorry, Uzi.

Look at this thread. Uzma found a great website about split ends. http://talk.hairboutique.com/forum/viewthread.asp?forum=AMB_AP881778452&id=3446

My question is who had the time and interest to create such a website?? Someone even more obsessed than us!! But every split end they describe... if I see it, it's getting cut off!!

OK, in related news...

Also in March, I mentioned how I had cut seriously damaged hairs off. They were in the hair just above my neck. They looked like tree trunks! Awful! Each strand was spindly and had branches coming off it, all up and down the shaft.

I cut them off completely, because those evil strands kept entangling themselves in the rest of my healthy hair, causing them to be damaged.

But anyway, I bring this up now, because I finally got my picture posted. I feel vain posting the link again, I've posted it twice already elsewhere:
http://www.geocities.com/electricleechproductions/TraciHair.html

Anyway, in the top picture, you can see a lot of 'wispies' around my neck. That's what I cut.
I think this horrendous damage was probably caused by marching band. We always wore policeman-style hats, and held them on with rubber bands around the back of the head. And you had to wear the hat all day, never take it off!
I didn't realize it at the time, but those rubber bands must have been doing serious damage!

Sadly, I don't have this problem anymore. I had to grow up and graduate and they don't let me march anymore. :(
I guess it's better for my hair though!

So anyway, the moral of my rambling:
If it's really damaged, I say cut it off! I've had no regrets!
I say, if the hair is really damaged, it's doing you no good! It's not attractive, it will only entangle in your healthy hair and spoil that, too... just do yourself a favor and be rid of it!

SG,

Very awesome!

The bends at the ends of my hair aren't from a split - it may just be a continuation of my wavy hair but it seems too sharp of a curve for that. I think it is damage (maybe from pulling) and figure that cutting an extra end is better than lobbing off for a "trim".

I'm impressed with your great haircut! Maybe we all should lobby our local shops to have a long hair specialist in each area, especially shops that are interested in continuing education of their employees.

Oh...and my occassional double split (aka "waves") are usually an inch or more apart - so seeing the entire end of the hair makes them much easier to find!

SG, you really are super!

Thank you!

Happy Saturday everybody! Too bad the weather sucks. I'd really like to go play outside.

But instead, I'll just nerd-away at the computer all day like the geek I am.

LetGo and Monica, thanks for the kind compliments!

LetGo, I agree. Whoever said you just twist hair up and then cut off everything that sticks out to remove split ends, what were they thinking? They must have different hair. Although I can sort of see where they're coming from... but I think perfectly healthy hair sometimes loops out and could get cut off, and damaged hair often hides! Laborious search and destroy is the only way for me.
Thanks for the compliment on the haircut! I'm pleased also. It would look a little better if I had combed it, but then I like the messy look sometimes too.

Monica! Thanks! It's probably one of the best french twists I've ever done. Sadly, it was just a happy accident. I've been practicing a lot, so I guess I'm finally getting better! It was hot, so I went to the restroom at work and put it up. I couldn't even see what it looked like in back until I got home, like 8 hours later! That's why I had my hubby snap the picture. When I finally saw it, I was so pleased with myself!
I thought I was keeping the pic for myself, and I said I would have to see about free web hosting so I could show my friends on the hair board and he said "Oh give me a minute" and here they are! It's nice to be married to a nerd. So I had him get the camera out again and take a pic of my hair down, too. :)

I'm pleased at how well Ficcares hold. That looks pretty good for 8 hours. I guess it's worth the $25 or however much I paid for it. If I don't lose it, I will have it for years. It's built to last. Hair sticks droop after several hours, or else they hold so tight it hurts after awhile.

I looked at your cat! She's white! Clean though. She looks like quite the primadonna. We have 2 cats also. The second is an orange tabby who's a regular doll. Gunther (in the photo) has more character though. :)

Hope you have nice weather where you are! This rain is getting so old.

LOL! i wouldn't exactly call my husband a nerd but he knows A LOT more about the computer than i do. he does it so fast too! lyris sent me a copy of her hair glossary but i couldn't open it. we have a safety thing on our mail. in 2 seconds he undid it. before we got married i was always calling him about something about the computer.

where can you buy them ficcares?

yes she thinks she is :) that's sabrina. she can be a brat at times but i love her so much! i've had her for almost 9 years. we also have a cute gray cat. her name is princess. she is so sweet. she hisses at sabrina through LOL. it's funny to watch them. we also have 5 dogs!

Hope you have nice weather where you are! This rain is getting so old.

:) I know how that is. I'm pretty good with computers, but there's always a point where I need help. Bob has points where he needs help, too. Sometimes. Once a year or so.

Anyhow... I bought my Ficcare sight-unseen on the internet, because I had no idea where to buy one in a regular store. I got it at http://www.tenderheaded.com
It's a size large.

5 dogs! Wow! I want a dog, but we're not home enough. At least the 2 cats entertain each other when they're home alone.
I grew up with dogs and was never a cat person, but these 2 cats we have are different somehow. :) Both of them would let you hold them all day if you wanted to. They're both very lovey. Oliver's on my lap right now.

You live in San Diego! I'm jealous. I hear it's beautiful there! I've never been. They have a beach just for dogs, right? (My parents want to retire there.)

WOW - you have a large family right now, Monica .

Puppies and kittens (and baby chicks, ducklings) are so cute - I couldn't bear to be parted with them.

Brave Monica!!!

Thanks for the compliment, Dave!

Wish I could adopt one of your puppies, Monica! But alas, San Diego is a LITTLE far to go. :)

it is hard selling the puppies. they are just to cute!there are beagle dogs. they are 4 weeks old and in 2 more weeks we can sell them but we have to then you get so attach to them. i already am. that's how we ended up with number 5. we said we would wait a little longer. by then she was 4 months old. we did sell her but the person who bought the puppy said the puppy cried when no one was home. so she brought her back.
