I've seen this style used for two reasons: to pin back bangs you want to keep out of your eyes and to cover up roots.
 
That being said, I don't think Jennifer looks bad at all.

It's like she tried to fix her bangs and then gave up.  I see too many women doing this and then when a celebrity does it, they all think that it's okay.

Hawg, I agree 100% that that "pull the front lock straight back" is just not good. I secretly call it the "skunk" look because it reminds me of the stripe. Seems to appear whenever celebrities run out of other ideas...

Seems blonder or lighter. Anyway, not successful as it seems to highlight what I always considered the strange geometry of her face: baby cute mouth and dimples with a carved in stone jaw and cheekbones (Rumer Willis is another the same).
