So... there's a group of us in the Longhorn Band getting together to dye our hair burnt orange for the UT v OU game in October... We can't do wash-out or semi-permanent dye because it would inevitably mar our uniforms... (not a good thing!!!). So it's unquestionably permanent dye.

My problem? All of the others are guys, who will just shave/trim off the dyed hair a few weeks after the game.

I'm trying to figure out a way to make this work, for me. I have medium long (like almost to bra stap in back), medium brown hair, somewhat layered and I have layered bangs that slope from my mid face to the full length in the back.

Does anyone have any ideas?

The only one I came up with was to dye just the tips orange, but I can't find any pictures or ideas for how to make that work and still look decent, and then just cut my hair a bit shorter when the time comes.

I also don't know, being a medium sort of brunette, if I would need to bleach my hair first. I tries to streak blue into my hair once without bleaching it, and it failed rather epically.

Any other ideas would be welcome also.

Thanks so much!!! :)

For possible Style ideas & color..If you can post a photo or pick a color even if you don't wish for this type of semi-permanent dye.  I think some fade or bleed but not all the time? maybe a day on the pillow... experts in semi should pipe up hehe..

Pravana  (This one does NOT!! come out of the hair & may be what you are looking for).... Now for the choice in style.

Levels to Pre-lighten to if using
pravana vivids:

7 for violet-magenta-red-orange.
9 for yellow-green.
10 for blue-silver-pink.
Once I know the color orange I could possibly find other brands tooEmbarrassed

I did this before.

Bleach the first 1-2 inches of your hair tips.

Get ManicPanic hair color. http://www.manicpanic.com/best_of_best.html

Browse those and look for the orange you're needing. If you bleach your hair, you need not to worry about the color being off because your hair color. It will turn up as bright as in those photos.

When your done, aye, just simple cut off the bleach/orange part. It's fast, easy, and relatively cheap.

Good luck and have fun.

Thank you both!

The Pravana color is actually really close to right on! The real color is probably a tiny tad lighter, but there are so many variants of the color, I think it's definitely close enough.

I don't have any clue how I want to style it, I've never been hugely into doing much with my hair. That's why my idea was just the tips. Although I like the idea of doing streaks... the only difficulty is what to do once the orange needs to go, eventually :/

This is the easel I'll be working with: http://www.flickr.com/photos/42839728@N03/3949393231/

Thank you both again :))
