Those who do their own color, do you actually apply the product to your hair by yourself with no help, or do you enlist the help of someone else to apply the product? If you do it by yourself, how do you do it? Specifically, how do you do the roots in the back of your hair when you're just touching up your color?

Hi erinspice,

I am a hairdresser and colour my clients hair everyday, but I usually do my own colour, and it is tricky lol. As you can not see the back of your head of course, lol. What I do is section the top of my head into a cross apply the colour to roots lifting each section as I go, as for the back I just try to brush the colour into the scalp and rub all over the hair.

Now being a hairdresser, I would always tell my clients to do a root regrowth (if same colour used) and only refresh the rest of the hair with warm water and remainder of colour the last 10 mins before end of development time. However doing your own colour is tricky, lol.

I have a hanging wall Mirror CHeapy & pulled off the Door to the hamper LOL & put the mirror on that...So basically it is a ROOM Separator with a hanging door mirror on it that I can pull way up close me so I can section my hair & practice.

I have a Gadgety arm mirror on the wall from Bed, Bath, & Beyond.  However steam gets to it & it is farther away.Embarrassed

Now if I get ultra lazy maybe I will just sit on the floor with two wall mirrors. I have two extra ones from tops of Clothes drawers lol.

You can find diagrams of how to do the color yourself at killerstrands.com. If you use sections, three in the front and two in the back, it is relatively easy to feel your way along.  You may feel awkward at first, but it gets easier the more you do it.

I have a mirror mounted behind my head to see the back.  I part my hair in four sections, pin each up.  Let one section down, usually start with the back.  Apply color to part, then part hair and apply color until that section is done.  Start other back section, move to front.  It takes practice to not miss spots.  Good luck!
