i am trying to get this look and i was wondering if I can get some advice

my hair type is very thick brown wavy hair, it is also a little curly in the back near the neck and a little near the ears, its around 4.5 inches long and its all even,(shaved first then grew out)

what i want to know is how to style it like in the picture.

should i use conditioner?

blow dry? air dry? gel?

i tried all different methods today, i put gel in after a shower with no conditioner, and upside down blowdry on high, and my hair was very frizzy and poofy. i also tried just air drying it with a leave in conditioner but that doesnt quite get me the look.
i have dove moisterizing shampoo and conditioner that i used. and my mom gave me KMS Curl up shamoo and curl prepare (which i think is the conditioner) it sort of made my hair curlier but also thicker

tomorrow im gonna try to take a shower with the curlshampoo and conditioner, then wear a towel on my head for 10 minutes then put in the leave in conditioner and just air dry

please any advice would help :)

- first pic is the style i want.
- second pic is my school picture (i look awful in the picture :P ) and i got that hair by shampoo and conditioner and blow drying and combing with a wide tooth comb

Hi fantaz...

I think you picked the perfect style for your hair type.

Your simply over thinking this and over working...

First it looks like you could use some shaping (cut), more layers and texturizing. This lightens up the style and allows really thick wavy hair to .....release the wave... (thats Stylist Talk). this is important to get your hair to do what you want it to and to take advantage of the wave you have in your hair.

Then;
Skip the blow dryer and the 10 minute towel thing. Simply wash and condition your hair (rinsing well...to remove all conditioner), comb through your hair....apply the proper styling product or two...depending on what they are.

This is the fun part, there are soooo many styling products available and you have to find the ones that you like. I like to use a good strong gel + some pamade mixed together, to create a flexable hold with shine.

Redken, Paul Mitchell, Bed Head, Alterna, Mop....the list is endless...all have great product that would work for you....Someone on this board could even reccomend some OTC products that I'm not familar with.....
My Spicific reccomendation is; Redkens OutShine mixed with the Rewind. Don't be afraid to use enough product. You are creating a set, and you need to, separate and control the fuzzys....

Take about a dime size of each in your palm...mix them togeather and apply the mixture to the front...then, take another dime size of each, mix, and apply to the back of your WET COMBED OUT hair, being sure to get the product distributed evenly....like a glass coating on each hair

Comb through for through even distribution....then use your fingers to toss and shape...like the picture...sort of just place the curls...then simply let dry at room temp...being careful to leave it alone to dry. Keep your out of it let it dry it is a set.

When its completely dry experiment with just using your fingers to break it up a bit...mabe a little more pamade...??? You will have to experiment at this point. Have fun, Cheers, Sophie.

PS...I think this style is perfect for you.

old topic.. but i i think my hair just isnt the same kind as the person in the big picture

hes in one of my classes and i can tell, that its a bit different, first on the sides his hair is pretty straight, and at the tips it kinds curls up, and his hair really isnt poofy i guess it just naturaly goes like that,
i spoke with him and he said

just wash it and when its short i kinda mold it to my liking with my hands but when its long i pretty much just shake it and let it fall how it wants

when i tried that with my hair it just poofs up, while his goes down
his is straighter, less thick and more curly

i dont think i need to use any products or anything, maybe a new type of shampoo and conditioner?
i just use pert plus for normal hair shampoo and conditioner (seperate) i tried dove didnt like it
maybe theres some salon shampoo and conditioner that will be better for me?

if you need a better pic of my hair i can get one
