I have read descriptions on the forum of "a very short pixie", or hair cut to only 1/2-1 inch length. To me this sounds too short to be a pixie. It's more like a brush cut, I think. I'd say a pixie can be cropped short, but the main thing that makes it this style is it being feathery. I can't see a 1 inch style being a pixie. Or am I wrong? When does hair get too short to be a pixie cut?

Jamie Lee Curtis wears a pixie. Everyone describes her hair as that.
If you have seen recent pics of her you know her hair is cut close to the head no longer than 1 inch at it's longest, part of it shorter than that.
If you have seen the old Mia Farrow movies she wore her hair that short too, very short. It was also called a pixie.
Charline Theron, when she wore her hair very short, it was also that short. It was called a pixie.

Pixies can be a little longer too. Alyssa Milano has very short hair in a pixie style but it is a little bit longer than Jamie Lee's pixie or than Mia Farrow's was.

Pixie describes a STYLE of haircut, not the length. The length can be from a half an inch long cut close to the head to as long as two or three inches or a bit longer. It's the style that makes it a pixie. A little longer in front and on top, shorter in the back and sides, whether it is three inches at it's longest or an inch.

I think a brush cut is meant to stand up, isn't it? Like the cuts men get when they go into boot camp. I think pixies are a bit long to stand up like that, and you wouldn't see scalp with a pixie, I would think, the way you would with a brush cut. Pixies often are feathery, and often styled onto the face in a kind of wispy way, but I don't think it's a hard and fast rule.
More awesome than a manatee!
