When my wife had her hair slightly beyond BSL her stylist was always suggesting that she should go shorter i.e. to at least the shoulders and possibly beyond. Due to this pressure she then changed salons although after a year or so she did decide to cut it to just below her shoulders and the new stylist duly obliged and my wife kept this style for a couple of years.

Recently as she was getting increasingly annoyed with having to tie her hair back off her face she felt it was time for another major change and made an appointment with her trusted stylist to cut her hair short. On arriving she asked the stylist to "cut the lot off". The stylist said that she didn't want to do something my wife wouldn't like and sugggested that she layer the front of her shoulder length style to stop it falling over her face. She never actually discussed short hair with my wife who was thinking of something that still covered her ears rather than a pixie or buzz cut. Oddly the same stylist has taken my wife through dramatic colour changes without raising an eyebrow.

Whilst I appreciate that stylists want their clients to look good and wouldn't recommend something ridciulous it seems odd that they want to impose their own style at times even if its not remotely what their client wants.

Has anybody else suffered the same problems?

Needless to say my wife is still having problems with her hair, which is still below her shoulders, and will no doubt be making another appointment in the near future to go short.

Stylists perceive themselves as experts at what they do, and many of them are. Would you want to go to a stylist that couldn't spend ten minutes with you and make a hairstyle or color judgement? I wouldn't. It's not really any different than a contractor, architect, photographer, or any creative field.

Chances are they know better than you do what will look good on you. That doesn't mean they know better what you'll like on yourself or where you are mentally or emotionally or how you live your life. Long hair may look better on your wife, but, for various reasons that's not what she wants right now.

Some stylists are afraid to cut. Women who make a drastic change sometimes regret it. And that makes stylists skittish. Or he might not think shorter would look that good on her.

Some people ask the stylist to recommend a style. More often, people have their own ideas, which may mean, "don't cut more than a half inch" or "get rid of this mess." The best stylist has his ideas, and isn't afraid to share them, but still differs to the client's wishes without putting up a fight. Unfortunately, sometimes the stylist's artisitic ego takes over.

Your wife needs to find a short style she really wants, get pictures, and then find a stylist who thinks short hair will look good on her.

I had problems like that all the time, which is a major reason I stopped going to salons. I would always get the stylists who would try to pressure me into something wispier or more feminine or whatever they wanted to do, and there would always be an argument. Sometimes it helps to be more assertive and not leave the chair until you get what you want, and definitely it causes fewer arguments to take pictures of what you want rather than a vague verbal description. But if the stylist is really stubborn, even all that may not help sometimes.

I've never had a dominant stylist per se, but I have had some in my past who didn't listen. The one I loved is now about an hour and fifteen minute drive from me, and when we move it will be more like three hours. This is why I now cut and color my own hair at home. I don't do anything drastic, but I can angle my sides and trim my two long layers (I basically have two--the bottom one and one about an inch and a half above it. I know it doesn't come out perfect but I've wavy hair so you can't really tell. I just don't trust a new stylist.

Someday, when I'll want more of a change, I will wait until I see a woman with hair similar to mine in texture and length with the style I want, and ask her who cuts her hair.

The other thing I would do if desperate would be to find a stylist with hair similar to mine in t & l w/a style similar to what I want.

But other than that, I have no trust. My hair is thick, and it's past the bottom of my bra strap now, and in very good condition, and I have too much invested in it not to be crazy-careful about going near a person with scizzors.

That's just me though!

hi, its good to find a stylist that has hair like your.

I have thick hair and so does my stylist even though he is a guy, he understand what works with this type of hair.

Good Luck, and when you find a good stylist stick with them there like gold to find.

I wear my hair short to the extreme, and thankfully I have a stylist who cuts it exactly as I want.

I would walk out immediately on a stylist that didn't do what I requested. We are paying them to follow our instructions.

I agree with Jasmine. We are indeed paying them to follow our instructions.

About a year ago I went to get 1/2 trimmed off my hair and the stylist seemed annoyed at it and ended up cutting off about 2 inches. This is a big deal for me because my very long hair means a lot to me. I was pissed off and upset.

I have found that male stylists tend to work better with long hair, as they aren't so agressive with the scissors. I had my last haircut done by a male stylist and he cut so little that I couldn't even tell the difference, except that the split ends were gone, which was what I wanted. So yeah, male stylists for long hair. I don't know about short hair, though.

Elissa, do you dye all of your hair or do you put in highlights? I'd like to try highlights at home, but from what I've read, highlights are a lot trickier than an all-over color.

I'm with you, Kuroneko......when I sense that they're really trying to talk me into something...something that I did not ask for (whether they're the pro or not)....I'll walk. I always-always take in a pic of what I want and I go early to discuss it so that there aren't any problems understanding each other...
