Blonde dye to make dark hair shiny?

Hi everyone, new here =)

I've been wondering if using blonde dye on my dark hair would make it shinier/glossier looking. My hair has gotten very dry and I can't figure out why but it isn't as shiny as it used to be. I rarely use any heat on it (maybe once every other month or so I'll straighten my hair) and I've never dyed it and I've tried different shampoos/conditioners but nothing brings back the shine.
I saw once on What Not to Wear, Nick Arrojo said he was going to put blonde in a woman's hair but not to make it lighter, only shiner. So I'm very curious and eager to try it...but I don't want to try it if it's not going to work or if it's going to damage my hair more.
Also if you have any product suggestions, please let me know. However I don't use any products tested on animals so my options are a bit limited, although I'm sure I could find similar products if I look around.

EDIT: I forgot to add that my hair is very dark. It looks black inside, but in the sunlight it's a very dark brown color with some dark copperish highlights. Most people are very jealous of my color teeheehee
