platinum blonde to dark/ombre??

So I currently have platinum blonde hair at the moment. And I want to go to a ombre hair color (dark brown on top, going into a golden blonde). I've been researching it and I've seen that I have to use a protein filler for that. Which one should I get and how should I apply it to my hair if I'm going for a two tone color? I'm REALLY confused because I want to keep the ends blonde and only go dark on top. Please help! Also, would I need to use the protein filler on my hair extensions as well?
