QuoteReplyTopic: Who's grown out their bangs? Posted: August 05 2003 at 11:15am
I'm going to try to grow out my bangs, which I've had since I was 16 (I'm now 43). My hair will be about shoulder length while they grow out, then when they catch up I'll grow everything out. At least that's my plan. Who has actually done this successfully, and how long did it take? I have advice on how to keep them under control while they grow out, I just want to hear from anybody who's done it, and whether it was worth it. Thanks!
I have completely grown out my bangs before(I have them again- and I'm keeping them- forehead is too big & wide). BUT, I let the rest of my hair grow also, I did not trim my bangs as they grew out(it takes longer for them to grow out if you keep trimming, and they won't blend in). This worked very well, and I recommend it.
I let my bangs grow out and I'd had them since highschool...am now 35. It was ruf, ruf at first...but patience definitely paid off. I love my hair now. My bangs are probably about 4 or so inches below my chin and I'll never cut them again!!
I am currently still growing out my bangs, though it will take a bit longer for them to catch up with my length, so I trim off and on to allow them time to catch up to my length.
In 1996 I had eyebrow length bangs, which I finally quit cutting. I would get them a certain length and then long for something around my face, cutting once again.
In November it will be 7 years since I last cut. They are now at classic length. (I'm 5'7" tall)
I don't see myself cutting bangs ever again unless something comes over me later in life.
I wish you the most luck. Just try your darndest to refrain, refrain, refrain.
If you are tempted to do it again, press your nose against the screen and stay there until the temptation has passed.

You know, Karen Marie... if Katherine does press her nose up against the screen, those scissors in your message might just jump off the screen and make the decision for her.
I grew out bangs, but not in the way y'all might be thinking! I grew them out along with the rest of my hair (think typical male execu-cut -- that was me in 1991).
I know several women who have very long hair and are growing out their bangs. So hang in there Katherine -- you can do it!
I'm just going through that now. I've been growing my hair for almost 14 months but my bangs were so short when I started I am just now able to keep them tucked behind my ears. Short bangs really limit what you can do with your hair, doubly so for a guy.

Dave, and others, do you think it is easier to start from short hair and grow it all out together? I notice that's what Dave did. I would do that if it makes the bang growing out easier to tolerate, in others' experience.

I've been trying to grow out my bangs but unfortunately, I think I'm gonna have to get them cut because I have a scar on my forehead from when I had chicken pox when I was 16. I think I want the bangs again to cover up the scar.

Hi, Katherine, To answer your last question---nah; why lose all the length you've gained just to catch up your bangs? I've grown out my bangs 3 times in my life; the last time was during the 90's when my hair was classic length. Yes, it's a big pain for a while, especially if you have tons of bangs like I did---for quite a while it looked as if I had 2 different hairdos: classic in back (I maintained that length while my bangs grew out; others have let all of it grow, since bangs tend to grow more speedily than the rest in an attempt to catch up) and a swingy bob in front --some strange sort of mullet???!! This frustrating situation often tempted me to cut layers in front several times to "blend in" the bangs, but the memory of how feathered hair years before just didn't work with my hair type (too floppy) prevented me...I just let them be. There are others here who started growing theirs out when the rest of their hair was even longer. As you have small periodic trims of your main length, you bangs will eventually catch up---and it certainly won't take several years like mine did. As for dealing with the bangs while growing out, I just brushed them to the side and put some gunk in them to keep them there, like I did when they were shorter. Later, I held them back by using a scarf or bandana as a headband (worn right at the hairline), and then started to use a barrette to hold them straight back--and measuring my progress by being able to fasten it farther & farther back as weeks went by. Being able to catch them in my ponytail was a real milestone. So, I'd say just be prepared for an awkward stage for a while and hang in there. dp
My length is now 37+ inches. My bangs have been growing since last September. They were eye length in the front, and my layers were earlobe length. They have all grown out and are all barely barely grazing my shoulders at this point. They are a pain in the butt for the first six months or so but I am SOOOOOOO glad I have grown them out. It adds to my horizontal volume unbelievably!! PS I am 43 too!!
Katherine, Nooooo! I did not intend to suggest that it would be easier to grow out bangs if the rest of the hair is short. It was only because I decided to "grow" for it (long hair) when all of my hair was short. There is no "need" for you to cut any of your length when growing out your bangs.
catt_grrl is one of the women I was thinking of who is growing out bangs. Hers are mostly grown out now, not even noticeable. (And by the way I'd like to add that she has spectacularly gorgeous hair.)
So as she says, "hang in there!" Katherine and in the long run you'll be glad you did.
What a great (hot) topic! Few things in this world create more annoyance than growing out bangs--especially if they're thick, heavy and short. I echo the sentiments here when I say have patience, don't give up and DON'T give in to the urge to chop them off. You might want to try some layers in your hair to help blend in the bangs once they get long enough. Try some barrettes to clip the sides back. When you get a couple of inches longer, you'll be able to slick all your hair (including the bangs) back and spray it down into a ponytail (or gelled back style if your hair is shorter.) The first time you do that people WILL notice. I was 14 when I grew my bangs out and I was at a forensics meet when I first pulled my bangs completely back. People I'd known for years said "it's like a whole new person!" Not quite, but it's a great feeling.

I grew my bangs out about 5 years ago. I used gel at the roots to give them some lift as they were growing out... also to stick them to the rest of my hair, gently.
Whatever the lowest hold number of Dep was, that's what I was using. I put it on wet and shaped it and when it was dry, it wasn't stiff.
But that was still the 90s... that might not pass today.

I grew my bangs out when the rest of my hair was about 3 inches past my shoulders and I had these horrible layers and a left over perm in my hair. Imagin how awful my hair looked! It was the 80s and I had the typical poofy bangs with the perm and layers. Very poodle like really.
Anyways while i was getting hair cuts to get rid of the layers and the perm I decided to grow them out....no idea why I decided this. i actualy didnt like the no bang look before that. The yhair dressers kept wanting to cut my bangs when i got my hair trimmed and i refused to let them even though my bangs probably were the most damaged due to the curling and hairspray. The hair dresser said i wouldnt be able to stand them and would get them cut. But I didnt.
When they were at the lenght where you couldnt wear them as regular bangs I would brush them to the side (thinkof the Little Mermaids bangs). Or I would clip them back. If you want them to feel shorter and you dont mind sleeping in curlers you can also put them in sponge curlers over night and then they end up shorter but very curly.
Anyways I dont think you should trim them. Just stick it out!!! Headbands work well too!.

i am growing mine out. they're eye level now. but i have face framing layers in the front from my bangs down.. since my hair is straight it looks good, so when the pangs get to chin length and the ret of my hair is real long, it wont look so akward wit the layers in place.

A bit late here, but I've been growing my bangs out since January 1999, and they've gone from just below my eyes to hip length. I never had that many bangs to begin with, so aside from the annoying cheek-to-shoulder stage, they've largely disappeared into the rest of my length, which is much longer, so I know it will take many more years for my bangs to catch up with the rest. For quite some time, they refused to cooperate when making a braid, for instance, and wanted to constantly fall out, so I simply twisted them into the locks of hair before braiding them. I agree with what others have written about trimming them. Don't do it, or better yet, trim them very unevenly, which helps them to blend in.

I'm also in the process of growing my bangs out. I have had them since 12 years of age, and I'm trying to grow them so they're 3+ inches past chin level, and intend upon growing the rest of my hair to my waist for a tapered look. Right now, the bangs are to my upper lip, and it can be so irritating, so I'm hoping for patience and holding them back with a small clip in the meantime. ;)

I have grown mine out twice! First time I had below classic and I put the bangs up in a pony tail with some of the hair on the crown and then continued down in a French braid. Second time, all my hair was rather short so I just had to use lots of gel and styling products. I think that finding the natural part helps a lot

Jennifer Eve is another of the women I was thinking of who are growing out bangs. I can attest to how well her bangs have blended in, they're not even noticeable at all unless you look for them, and even then you might not see them.
The other two women I know who have long hair and are growing out bangs do not frequent this website.
