Hi everyone. I've loved reading the supporting messages about all this long hair; however, I am not sure if there is anyone who posts here grows there hair long for biblical reasons? I never had very long hair through high school and college but after all that I started going to a Pentecostal church and many women have long hair. Biblically, it is to show you are submitted to your husband and God. I don't cut it, trim it, nothing. Having two children under 3 to chase after, all this hair can be a big stress to me. It is refreshing to hear so many people WANT to have all this hair. I look forward to reading more inspiring stories to make me love my hair on the days when I just want to... I won't even say it.

You are submitted to your husband? Sounds like a S/M submissive/dominant cult thing.
It's fine for a Christian, or anyone of any other religion, to have long hair, but don't try and tell me that women who don't have long hair aren't good Christians. It's what is in the heart that counts, it says that in the Bible. Hair is just a surface level thing, someone's heart and soul are far, far more important.

NYShopGirl,
There are so many ways to interpret the scriptures. If I may suggest, read them for yourself and take your OWN meaning from them. I would never assume to ask you to change your ways....but do try and use your own mind and heart when it comes to God.
God doesn't specify HOW long in the bible, does he?
make sure that whatever length it is, you like it and enjoy it. I have 4 kids under the age of 8 and I know it is hard to put family first when you yourself are feeling unhappy. Take a little bit of time to yourself and enjoy your hair, whatever length it is.

Try not to make religion so legalistic. It's not about the religion... it's about the relationship! That being said, I honestly don't think God will mind if you cut your hair... husband maybe, but not God. He's looking at your heart, not your head.
Good luck. Becky

Wow! I think it may be hard to stick around here. I really was only giving a background about myself and WAS NOT making any accusations or assumtions about other people. My question was whether anybody grew their hair long for biblical reasons...it was not a question about whether people thought I was right or wrong. I really thought it was a simple question, but I guess that kind of question brings everything and everyone out of the woodwork. No matter what...I will not be ashamed of what I have.

Sorry NYshopgirl.... Sorry, I guess we all misinterpreted what you were asking/saying.

Hair has always been a part of culture and religion so don't feel alone. Styles of hair, adornments, length. I grew my hair long partly because of it's significance in maidenhood in ages past (mostly because I like the style though) It's not really the same but, my hair does have an importance to me that goes beyond physical. If you want to grow your hair as a sign of devotion then thats cool. (People have done way worse thing in the name of devotion) So on the days when you feel like cutting it off, spend some time with your hair, comb it out brush it, and put it in a pretty style. Braid flowers into it, make yourself feel good about having it. If your gonna have long hair you should enjoy it. It can be really fun.

NYShopGirl, hi!and welcome
I have long hair pertly for religious reasons. It's always been long, but I now keep it that way because of what I've read in the Bible. I wouldn't cut it, but only because I don't want to. If it said in the Bible to have short hair, I probably still wouldn't want it short. However, religion really adds some weight to arguements with fashion concious friends
I don't have a hubby, but if/when I do, I won't cut my hair for him. As I don't believe in mixed religion marriages, it shouldn't be an issue. I too am Pentecostal (Elim). My adivice is - love your hair. God gave it to you.
One last thing - did you mean submitted literally? I see commitment to your husband as important, of course. I can't remember the exact wording, but isn't long hair a sign of servitude to God and your husband?
The Old Testament is basically just the story of the ancient Jews; their parables, myths, and customs, how they viewed God, and their relations with other groups of people.
There were many practices in the Old Testament that Christians or Jews no longer practice. The stoning of people for somewhat minor crimes is an example. Other examples: The sacrifice and burning of animals to "please" God. Slavery.
-and, the idea that all women must grow their hair long. These are just a few examples, there are many others.
This reminds me a little of fundamentalist Muslims who believe that a woman has to wear a headscarf all of the time in public to reach salvation and to be right with God (Allah). Moderate, or less fundamentalist, Muslims don't believe this of course.
Personally I believe it is completely absurd to believe that a long haired Christian woman is better to God than a short haired Christian woman, or that a muslim woman with a headscarf is better than a Muslim woman who doesn't wear a headscarf.
But we all have our beliefs.

Off the current conversation, but to the O.P.'s point:
A small reminder that the Bible is contardictory if the case being is male + hair.
Num.6:5 "No razor shall come upon his [a Nazarite's] head. He shall be holy, and shall let the locks of the hair on his head grow." Jg.13:5 "For, lo, thou shalt conceive, and bear a son [Samson]; and no razor shall come on his head: for the child shall be a Nazarite." 1 Sam.1:11 "I will give him [Samuel] unto the Lord all the days of his life, and there shall no razor come upon his head."
1 Cor.11:14 "Doth not even nature herself teach you, that, if a man have long hair, it is a shame unto him?"
In any case, considering the biblical word, then for a man, the whole idea of it is pointless due to this clear contradiction. There are other religious groups and within them castes or clergy which can sway one way or the other, usually very clear about shaved heads or untouched heads.
My case ? I'm an atheist, and I'm growing it for me. More than a sufficient reason for anyone regardless of their beliefs.
I hate all of the following and lots more : Fundamentalists, racists, sexists, fascists, ageists (people saying seniors = senile , kids = stupid , 18 = immature or a combo of them), and bigots for causes yet to receive their own designation.

Well I'm a Christian and I wear my hair short. It is offensive to me if someone says I am less of a Christian because I wear my hair short. That is ridiculous and insulting! Do these people who judge us on such trivial issues know our hearts and our minds and our souls?!!!! Only God can judge people about something like that.!!!!!!!!!!
Still I like enfys. I have always thought she is a nice girl and a lovely person.
But I don't like people playing God and judging me just because of my hairstyle!

Sorry Kintaro... there are absolutely NO contradictions in the Bible. The verses you quoted have been taken out of context. Try reading the entire chapter, or even the books you quoted from. Sometimes you even have to go back to research history to understand the true meanings. I'm a Christian, and I personally don't believe God cares if a man's hair is long or a woman's hair is short. He looks at our hearts....
1 Samuel 16:7 ... The LORD doesn't make decisions the way you do! People judge by outward appearance, but the LORD looks at a person's thoughts and intentions.

This is a wonderful conversation... for one of the other boards. We are now discussing relationships with a religion, which some of us have fabulous and positive experiences with and some of us have, um, other experiences.
Mister Happy keeps his fetishes in the closet here not because he doesn't want to talk about them, but he respects other people's desire to NOT talk about them.
Let's do the same here with our religious and spiritual journeys, but feel free to talk about them in those appropriate places. (That includes my living room here in Ohio where the fire is buring hot and the bar is open. Come on by...)
Having a good hair day, I bid you farewell.
Mr. Happy

What about females with Alopecia? They are bald not by choice. I feel it is up to the individual to serve God the way that they chose! Short hair, long hair, or no hair at all. What about a person with Alopecia that wears wigs? You could say they are lying by wearing the wigs- not their real hair. I say that do whatever you feel comfortable to do. After all I believe that God wants us to be happy and that to me says we should live our lives like we want. Short hair is not hurting anyone. Unless you walk around with scissors wanting to cut other peoples hair. - Just my 2 cents worth- Debbie
There is more to life than hair...Come on---Go get a life!!!!!!!

Certain types of religious beliefs have beliefs about hair types, what kind of clothes to wear etc. Each is different.
Honestly, to me hair is just hair. I like it long, and I think I look better that way. Pixie Lady likes her's short (in a pixie.) It is just all about what a person's beliefs are!
For me, I'm just growing out my hair because I like it. When I was in High school (in Missouri) there were a couple pencostal (sp) familes that went to the school. All of the girls had really long hair, wore skirts, and no makeup. That was just what they believed.
To the person who originally posted this thread, what are your thoughts on perming your long hair? I know that cutting is something you don't do, but I didn't know about that. Several of the girls I knew would get their long hair permed.
Thanks, and welcome to the board!

I heard it´s a fairly common practice among christian nuns with traditional, medieval clothing, to shave their heads, for hygienic reasons.
Interesting how this discussion stirr up so much feeling. Maybe because religious authority is really impossible to respond to - I mean, how do you argue with someone who thinks the know what God wants?
The more you complain, the longer God lets you live.

Putting on my moderator hat here...
I will reiterate by paraphrasing what "Mr. Happy" has written: Beyond the initial post, this discussion is for the most part not appropriate for this board. It is more appropriate for the "Hair Politics" board.
We all should allow "NYshopgirl152" to follow her beliefs as she sees fit without any attempts to talk her out of it. Her profession does not invalidate any other points of view.
Several of you have posted helpful replies. For that, I thank you. But from this point forward, I will delete any posts that do not address "NYshopgirl152"'s initial query.

Okay, forgive me, I have strong thoughts on this: Once a woman came up to me and said "God gave man woman and God gave woman Hair. Your hair is your only pride".
What? Excuse me? Men get a living soul other than their own to use and we get hair??? Men get the honor of having woman serving them and we get hair to make it all equal? No. i think not. It almost made me want to cut off all my hair except that I grow it for my own pleasure and beauty (as sinful as THAT is!!!).
I am not a feminist, I am not against religion. But I am for equality and do not belive women are ment to be subservient to men.
Really im sorry NYshop, Im not trying to start an arguement or disrespect your belifes, its just that if YOU dont want long hair you shouldnt have to have it.
You do not need long hair to show your respect for your husband or your service to God. Like others have said it is something within your heart and soul that gives true respect. If your hair was short would you love him less?
These are just my thoughts on the subject and you ought to do as you feel is best for your own soul and life. I just personly dont belive women are made to serve men and I dont like the idea of haveing long hair to show this servitude.
LOL, my man prefers short hair on women, but Im not cutting my hair to please him. I like long hair on men, but Im not requesting that he grow his.
In Jesus's time we ALL had long hair (except the Romans perhaps) and we all wore dresses!!!
I love long hair because its a vainity! Long hair is beautiful, flowing, soft, luxurious, sensuous... Everything that most religions dont want in appearance. Im surprized more religions dont promote cutting it all off as a symbol of servitude and submission!
Anyways i have met many people who keep it long for religion...but hey I live in the South.

By the way, NYSHOpGIrl,
The only reason I went on and on is becasue it sounds like you would prefer to have short hair if you had your own way. I just dont think anyone should have to look a certain way if they are more comfortable looking a different way.
It upsets me when someone does something to thier appearance when thye really want to look differently and long hair is a royal pain for alot of people so I can understand wanting it short.
I just dont like it when someone is keeping it long or short becasue someone or something told them to.
If you are keeping it long and like it best long even if its for religious reasons I respect your choice =)
