A while back I went to a salon and the stylist told me that my hair color did nothing for me, the thing was, it was my natural color. My natural hair is black. He said that when we are children are natural color is cute but when we grow older it might not fit. I'm caucasion and have very pale skin and light eyes is black hair really that horrible? This was in arizona, most women have bleach blonde hair and tans. Why would I want to be a clone of everyone else? Isn't that a rude comment for a hairdresser to make? In fact I like the way I look and if I did lighten my hair it would be dry and dead looking. Besides who wants blonde hair with black roots and black eyebrows. That is trailer park trash. I wish more women would accept their natural color, I cringe when I see dark roots. Wow I'm ranting, sorry!

Good for you, Iris! Your hair sounds great. That hairdresser was very rude, don't ever go back there.

I'm a Hairdresser, and I say; that hairdresser was manipulative and rude.

Sounds to me like, & I could be wrong...It wasn't about, how your natural haircolor looked on you, it was about...his bottomline.

hi iris,

sorry about your terrible experience. i guess his job is to be honest but he could have said it in a better way. If you use a color close to your natural color it will make it shiny. Hair gets damaged when the color is lifted too much.(going from black to blonde)

you should be you and don't conform.

P.S. There's nothing wrong with being blonde if your a brunette. My natural color is dark brown but I color my hair light golden brown with golden hi lites. I think I look much better with this color than my natural color. (Pictures don't lie.)

Sorry, I felt like venting too.

Hey Iris!
Sounds to me like he was just trying to get you to spend $$$$. Don't listen to any of that kinda hooey, and definitely don't go back...a good stylist/ colorist should be interested in what the client wants, and not try to force changes on them.
As far as your color- I think black hair with pale skin and light eyes looks gorgeous. I'm pale too, with blue eyes, and until just this last weekend I dyed my hair black to achieve that dramatic look (it was too much upkeep so I went lighter again). There's absolutely nothing wrong with that look- I think its unique and can be quite striking. If you like it, keep it! Besides, dyeing your hair (fun as it is) can be a pain and in the long run it can damage your hair and sometimes change it to strange colors that you don't want, etc...all sorts of problems.
Anyway, do what YOU want with it...its YOUR hair, right? :)

Love,
Inga

That stylist was VERY rude and probably manipulative. You should tell
to their face that they should mind their own business and that anyway,
they won't get yours in the future!!! Our natural color doesn't look
good when we're older, hogwash! If there were two identical twin
girls I found cute, and one had dyed hair, the other didn't, I'd date the
one with her natural color rather than the other (assuming their characters
were the same) automatically - I prefer natural hair out of principle, even
if it is a plainer color. Indeed, dyeing one's hair can easily clash with your
other natural colors; we are MEANT BY NATURE TO HAVE OUR NATURAL
COLORS FOR CRYING OUT LOUD. Look at the girls on "General Hospital";
Summer and Courtney can pull off the blonde look because they have
light colored skin and eyes, but Carly, who has dark eyes, will NOT look
right until she goes back to her natural color. And what's so great about
being blonde anyway? I prefer diversity.

Anyway, it's not your stylist's job to give unsolicited advice, I think, but to
take directions from you, if they are feasible.

Thanks to everyone who replied,
Also I don't want to offend anyone who does dye their hair a different color or is blonde. It is just my preference to keep my natural color.

Things people will never say:
George W. Bush: "John Lennon was right, let's give peace a chance."
Ozzy Osbourne: "Gosh, I feel so well today"
A. Hairdresser: "Wow! Whoever cut your hair before did a really good job!!"

Iris, what an insult! The problem is this: we're so used to see hair that is not naturally colored, so that the natural color looks odd in contrast.

Same with food. When we add artificial food colorings into everything, then the real color of food looks bland by comparison.

I would have looked at the hairdresser and said, "But it's what Mother Nature gave me, and I feel really good about how I look with it!"

It's so true that people are careless with words (oh, me included!). It's much harder to think how our words sound to others.
