I wonder how many people who keep thier hair long for religious reason actualy like thier hair long. I wonder if they would choose short if not for thier belifes.

If the religous restriction/motive disapeared how many would keep thier hair long? Would there be far fewer super longies?

I ask this because at the mall yesterday i saw a mother and daughter who obviously dressed and kept thier hair long for religous reasons (in this case you COULD tell). Moms hair was not super long but it was obviously not trimmed or cut. Daughter was tall (age about 16 as I guess) had thighlenth hair, alos not trimmed or cut.

I think thats about as long as eather could grow theirs because the last foot to 2 feet were very very wispy and thin like a ghost of what grew at the top of thier heads (much thicker).

Anyways, if daughter cut about 2.5 to 3 feet off she would still have long hair to her waist but it would look so much nicer. I wonder if she ever thinks her hair is not attractive being so scraggily and thin. Shes old enough to be aware of beauty and the like and to want to be a typical teen. She was shopping in the Body Shop after all (buying peasant blouses, lol...the only concervative things there). But I cant imagin that she doesnt feel a bit akward and plain when every other girl in there seems to have healthy hair and more "pretty" clothes.

I know Im looking from the eyes of someone who inst affected by her religious belifes. But I know how teens think and how they want to fit in and she looked wistful to me.

As for cutting her hair...I love long hair, especialy very long hair, but only if its healthy. I wonder if she is embaressed about hers. I wonder if she would not have it so long at all if not for religions.

Ah, I wish religion would disapear. Spirituality can remain, but religions away!

Really this is all hair related.

That's an interesting idea, but like you said, it's hard to understand someone else's beliefs coming from our own viewpoint. If the girl was raised with her religion and truly embraces it, then most likely those values outweigh the desire to look attractive to the outside world.

Ive kindof wondered this too. To make it a wider question: I wonder how many people would look diferently from what they do now if they didnt have any outside influance (namely friends, family, signifigant others and religion). Some people will keep thier hair long or short becuase someone asks them too or prefers it.

Im not going to count fashion followers in this because i think THEYare following what they want: to be fashionable. Although thye too probably prefer certain fads over others.

I can't help but wonder that, too. Devoid of all outside influence, would we still look the way that we do? Certainly, I've followed some trends, but only because I liked them (sometimes the emphasis is on the past tense; what can I say, tastes change!). On the other hand, I've also done some things simply to react against what people expect, without considering that the thing that I've done to assert my individuality ironically isn't "me" at all.

About religion: I think that if a person has chosen to follow a religion, he/she would embrace the restrictions that come with it, since with belief comes the understanding of why these restrictions are in place. But as I am not particularly religious myself, I'm clearly not speaking from first-hand experience!
Monica: Isn't there any way that you could look at this as flattering? I mean, she's doing this to be more like you.
Rachel: Well, then, couldn't she have just copied my haircut?

Im glad to hear such positive responces to my writing. Its nice to know others wonder some of the same things I do.

heres a follow up question:

What would you do differently if you didnt care about society/the norm and fashion?

Personaly I would never ever wear uncomfortable shoes and I would paint my face with designs and art just for fun.

I like this topic! I would dress up in fancy gowns whenever i feel lik it and I would sport Carrie Bradshaw like floofly skirts and gowns (i love those things and have liked them sine bfore the show...but no one really wears them too often...except becasue of the show some styles are coming out).

I would dress victorian and renaissance style, I would wear hippy clothes (oh, i do do that now). i would wear crowns and tiaras and sparkly things.

To me clothes are decorations.

Id kept my hair as is....oh wait I would wear my hair in "other era" styles. On Christmas and New Years I usualy try to create a new style, usualy very victorian looking so I do do that on occassion...but if I was to wear boing boing curls out to the mall all done up like i was going to a masked ball poeple would think me odd....

But for Christmas i do it anyways!!!

I sometiems think i belong in a different time or two.

I would probably wear pajamas and fleece everywhere. Actually sometimes to class I do practically wear pajamas, but there are so many weird styles at college that I think it blends in.

i dont think its really possible for me to dress any less. normally. actually that was a lie. i dont dress like marylin manson. that would be a lot less normal. right now im still working the comba boots and fishnet t shirts. and the plastic hair. cant forget the plastic hair.

dont worry. i do have a place here. i got real bra strap length hair. i just like. attaching somewhat unconventional things to it. right now. its just straight and black. meh.
