hi guys, new to this board. i used to have really, really long hair. It is extremely thick and natraully curly. when let to be curly, it was between BSL and my waist but when straight, down to my waist. My hair texture drastically changed and i didn't know what to do but cut it and eventually for the ease of fixing the large multitude of hair i had, i cut it really short. i'm talking like 4 inches long. I know, i know!

i missed my long hair though, i love updos and felt so feminine with my long hair and the hubby likes that i can wear updos when it's longer. i've grown it to my shoulders but with this horrible, humid, humid weather here in South Louisiana, having to deal with major frizz, i am SOOOO tempted to chop it again. Someone please give me a boost, here!

I'm right there with you on the humidity! My hair's naturally wavy, and with the humid days we've been having here, I've had a few of what I like to call "Monica days." Anyway, it's on these days that I'm glad that my hair is long, and that I can do updos with it, because if it were short there would be no weight to it and it would be just out of control. There are pictures of me as a small child where I literally have a 'fro. Endearing on a 3-year-old, not so much on a college student. Anyway, there are some lovely updos that you can do with curly hair, even at your length. Maybe try twisting sections back and leaving some tendrils loose.
Monica: Isn't there any way that you could look at this as flattering? I mean, she's doing this to be more like you.
Rachel: Well, then, couldn't she have just copied my haircut?

i just got it trimmed two weeks ago and it did make a difference. i'm just frustrated with having to deal with the frizziness in this horrible humidity, i really needed to vent. Thanks for listening, my hubby just laughs when i tell him i'm so aggravated that i want to chop it. he thinks it's funny that i'm always changing not only the shade but the style and just tells me to do whatever i want. Big help, huh? Especially when i am determined to let it grow.
Thank you for tolerating my complaints.

The best thing to do if you want to grow it back is to avoid trims. By next year, you should be able to braid it nicely on "frizzy", humid days. Don't give up; beautiful long hair is so very much worth it if the woman loves it. Nothing in this life is more artistic and inspiring to me. Hugs, Bob
P.S. I'm sorry you had to cut it!

Hi-- A couple weeks ago I saw the film Now, Voyager (1942) with Bette Davis. It seemed to me that in the more sophisticated incarnation of Bette Davis's character, that her hair that was on the shorter side but artfully held in place with combs that gave short hair an appearance of being longer and put up. I thought that this was cleverly done and it might be something to try out while waiting for hair to grow out and still enjoy the feeling of one's hair being "up" but not necessarily cropped.

Hi Frizzygurl,

I live in Florida, so I am familiar with the summertime heat & humidity (ugh, I hate it outside right now...)

How often do you wash your hair? Your hair might be overly-cleaned (of sebum), so the moisture from the humidity is absorbed into your strands, making your hair frizzy. If possible, you might want to consider washing your hair less often, and try diluting the shampoo, directing it onto and massaging the scalp (and the portion of the strands nearest the scalp).

Also, you may want to consider using a bit of oil or wax on your hair. My favorite is jojoba. Just a few drops in the palm of one hand, rub the hands together to spread it out, and gently smooth onto the top/outside of your hair, then gradually working "into" the mass of hair. The technique takes practice, but when you get the hang of it, the result is frizz that has been tamed!

I hope this helps.

Thanks for the help, i made a trip to the store yesterday for some small clips to help me get thru this akward stage.

Dave, i only wash my hair every 3 to 4 days when curly and can go about a week when i straighten it out which i don't like to do very often except when i really am fed up with it. i might add that i get a lot of flak for not washing my hair more often but my skin and hair is very dry. i use a moisturizing shampoo and conditioner and even the gel i use has been great for my hair and keeping it from being overly dry.

i will try the jojoba oil, i have heard a lot of good things about it and definately could try something new.

Thanks!!!!!!

Why would anybody give you flak for the frequency with which you wash your hair? I guess if other people can't handle the truth in a respectful way, then don't bother telling them.

Good luck with the jojoba -- I hope it works for you!

Hi. I'm in the process of growing mine out as well. I ordered The Breaking Point (Philosophy line) two months ago. I now use it on the ends sparingly (or, not so sparingly if it's humid outside) and leave it in all day. It's comprised of vitamins A & E, sunflower, sage, lavender and castor oil (along with panthenol and a few other ingredients). I absolutely ADORE this product. I use very little and I don't follow the package instructions, which require you to use 1/2 the bottle and leave it in overnight (although that gives good results, too, just not on a day to day basis.) Smells a bit "herb-ish" but not unpleasant. this had helped the breakage and most definately the frizzes. I've found it's the closest thing to sebum (since my hair is severely damaged, dry and generally un-cooperative). It costs 12 dollars for 2 oz., but well worth it.

Hi Aileen! Excellent! Glad to hear you've found a product that works so well for your hair.

So, frizzygurl.... have you had a chance to get and use some jojoba yet?

Just thought I´d mention: I suddenly broke out from the skincare line I´ve been using for ever (hypoallergenic, what!), and I tried the jojoba - it´s really great for the skin as well! Superstuff!

Dave, i have not been able to try it yet, my brother's wedding was this past weekend and up till now, with all of the planning and work to do have not been able to look for it. Would Sally's carry it? if not, i will have to order it online which is no problem. i'm headed to Destin for vacation in a month and will really need it then, my hair hates the beach, or vise versa.

Speaking of, i always bring a spray bottle with a mixture of conditioner and water to the beach and try to braid it while at the beach. Any other suggestions to keep it healthy while being exposed to the sun and surf?

Hi Frizzygurl,

Does Sally's sell it? I honestly don't know. I should be ashamed, but I've never shopped for it there. (I would guess that they do sell it, though).

I would recommend wearing a head covering, such as a hat or a bandana.

Enjoy those Florida panhandle beaches. They're beautiful.
