Sorry it took me so long to post... I've been on vacation for a week! In response to Dave, my hair was past my shoulders last summer when I decided to go for broke... to my waist! I can't imagine that it would be very manageable if it were longer than that... but I can't speak from experience yet! :-)OK, here is my secret recipe for a great conditioning oil/sun screen. I use it as a scalp massage before bed, on the ends when hanging around the house or putting my hair in a bun, and all over when I'm outdoors swimming, boating, etc. When I wash it out, my hair is really shiny and soft.Ingredients: Pure Aloe gel (acts as a natural sunscreen) Green tea (I boil the tea bag and use a bit of the brew... acts as a UVB ray protectant) Jojoba oil (natural sunscreen) St. John's Wort (Yes, the vitamin! I put a bit of the powder in the mixture... great for dry hair) Cocoa Butter Vitamin E (as a preservative) Tea Tree Oil (as a preservative) Coconut oil (great hair emollient) Lemon essential oil (for a great scent!)Mix together in a saucepan and bring to a boil. Let cool and store in plastic or glass bottles.I buy all the ingredients at a health food store. The ingredients can be expensive, I believe around $45 for all of them, but they make a lot of the potion that lasts for months! I also use it on my face when it's really dry and on my hands -- it's a great cuticle conditioner, too.If you don't feel like making your own, Louise Marie has a great oil called "Bliss Tips" that I like to use. I don't know if it has any sunscreen properties. That's it for now! Hope to hear from you all soon.

Thanks Jen. This recipe is fascinating. I have never seen anything like it before. I have heard that St. John's Wort is great for helping grow healthy hair...and I have used the actual drops in a olive oil mixture. Thanks again. I hope you had a really great vacation.Karen> Sorry it took me so long to post... I've> been on vacation for a week! Hi Jen,Thanks for posting your recipe. I have a couple of questions about it. First of all, what is cocoa butter vitamin E? And also, what quantities of each ingredient do you use? On the St. Johns Wort, do you use the powder from a supplement capsule? Thanks.> Sorry it took me so long to post... I've> been on vacation for a week! >Hi Clare,Sorry my message was confusing! The Cocoa Butter and Vitamin E are two separate ingredients. Cocoa Butter comes in a jar at the health food store. I usually just puncture a Vitamin E capsule, but you can also find the oil in a dropper. The St. John's Wort comes in a vitamin capsule... I just open it and use the powder. It's also good for your hair to take it as a supplement! As far as quantities, I have used different amounts for different batches. I know that's not very scientific! For instance, I'll boil together a whole jar of cocoa butter, coconut oil and aloe gel, then add a few drops of jojoba oil, Vitamin E, green tea and essential oil. Go VERY SPARINGLY on the Tea Tree Oil. It smells rather strong, but that's the antiseptic quality that will keep everything fresh.Anyway, this is just my own concoction that works well for me. As Karen says, "Try at your own risk!" Seriously, though, have fun with it and experiment.

> The> St. John's Wort comes in a vitamin capsule...> I just open it and use the powder. It's also good> for your hair to take it as a supplement!Be careful of taking St. John's Wort if you're on any other medications. It contains natural MAOI inhibitors and can cause reactions with other medications (why MAOI inhibitors aren't used as much for antidepressents). Even if you take other medications though it should be fine to put it on your hair.> Go VERY SPARINGLY> on the Tea Tree Oil. It smells rather strong,> but that's the antiseptic quality that will keep> everything fresh.Whenever I have a scalp irritation I combine jojoba oil with a few drops of Tea Tree Oil and a few drops of Eucalyptus oil and apply to my scalp. It really seems to help clearing up any persistent scaliness or itchyness.-jennifer
