How does one maintain highlights? Is moisturizing and conditioning the hair enough?

I'm thinking that highlights are done by stripping hair color, and color-safe hair products are different because those are used so the hair dye doesn't strip off. So I'm not sure how helpful it is to use products for dyed hair.
