Hi, thanx for readin, I have some questions:
I have really long (waist length) medium-dark brown hair but my ends are way lighter than my roots from being in the sun a lot over past summers. (I think my hair is actually getting darker as well, is that normal?) Well, to make a long story, short, I want to dye all of my hair to match my roots. I bought dark brown haircolor (Revlon ColorSilk, it's what my mother uses) to match my hair but a lot of people have been telling me that when you dye your hair a dark color it sometimes comes out black. All I want to do is have all of my hair be my normal dark brown. :( What are the chances of my hair being black when I'm done? Is there anything I can do to avoid this? I've never dyed my hair before, is it worth the risk? Thank you ever so much for your help! ..::vanessa::..

I have waist-length hair and used to have that problem. (Those ends have probably been exposed to the sun for at least 6 summers now.) Then, I highlighted my hair two different shades of blonde. Now, my roots are lighter than the ends. Opposite problem.
Enough about me. Now for your issue -- Is your mom's natural colour still dark brown or is her hair greying? If she's colouring over grey, your results will differ from hers.
I have heard hair disaster stories about dark brown hair turning Goth black when using a dark permanent colour.
If I were you, I would use a semi-permanent dark brown hair colour (like Clairol Natural Instincts). If it ends up too dark, it will wash out gradually. But, it will probably last much longer on your ends, because they are lighter, drier and more porous than the rest of your hair. I think that might solve your problem.
You could also just trim off the ends. I know you probably won't take that advice. I'm always reluctant to cut my hair.
I'm not an expert though; there are lots of people on this board who would be much more knowledgeable on this subject. Let's hope you hear from them.
One more thing: I've found that working a few drops of Redken "Glass" through the ends of my hair when it's towel-dry smooths the ends and actually makes them look darker.

Well there are a lot of things u have to consider, first, how porous is ur hair...u said that ur ends were "sun bleached" from spending time outdoors, so this could most probably mean that ur ends are more porous (or more likley to absorb color quicker) than ur midshaft and roots. So here my advice, when u mix up the color, apply it to ur roots and lengths first then apply it to ur ends last. Also make sure u don't leave on the color for too long! Well i hope this clears everything!
