Hand-tied is thinner and, theoretically, less detectable in the hair for tracks. But for clip-ons, assuming you intend to cut the weft, you must get machine weft; hand-tied will fall apart if you cut it. :)
Are there differences in the thicknesses of machine wefts? I cut a piece of cheap BSS weft to just see what it looked like with a few microrings holding it in. It felt a little funny, and I could just feel the thickness of the weft. If I put it any higher than an inch or two above my ears, it would make a noticeable ridge, too.
Yes, there is a difference from brand to brand, but I'm not the best person to comment on which ones are the best (I wear strand-by-strand, rather than tracks). I'm sure someone else will chime in, though.
I personally like the hand tied hair, because the weft is smaller, and it sheds less. It is best to sew this hair in and fold the ends under and sew them down if you are not taking the hair from ear to ear.
