Help -- Before I ruin my hair!

Okay, here`s the situation. My hair is a light to medium brown. A couple months ago I got caramel highlights done professionally. Now that it`s summer, I`d really like to dye my hair dark red, but I`m too scared to dye it permanently. So I`ve decided to do a temporary color, see if I like it, then a semi-permanent. My question is when the temp and semi-permanents wash out, are my origional highlights going to be damaged by the red? Or should they stay the same? My mom seems to think that the highlights are going to react to the temp/semi-perm color and they`re going to turn colors. Does anyone know?

I`m not so sure they will be a light red. Bleached hair, or blonde hair grabs colour, and might make it a permanent result. I really suggest talking to a hairdresser about it, even if you are going to do it yourself. =)
