QuoteReplyTopic: when and how often should you get a trim? Posted: March 30 2005 at 11:14am
Hello Everyone,
I thought I would pop in and see what's new...and to my surprise the entire site has got a make over and it look's great!!!! My hair growth is progressing nicely and I'am sticking to my commitment and avoiding scissors at all costs. I have been so commited, that I'am leary about even getting a trim but I do know they are nessessary. My question is..."When and how often should you get a trim"? Thanks in advance for all replies.

I'm sure many will disagree with our approach, but Jennifer stays away
from scissors unless her ends get *VERY* bad. Our thought is that
her hair is growing faster than the ends are splitting so she's letting
her hair grow (except for some shaping as the middle gets longer) and
once she gets to the length she wants, she'll trim up the bad
ends. At that point, the 2-3 inches she'll remove will grow back
in just a few months. Growth is a slow process and she's anxious
to get her hair back to waist-length like it was a few years ago so we
just let it grow for now.
Trimming a little bit every couple months or so... that will prevent having to trim more than you would have to (if you had put it off). I trim when my ends start to tangle more than I'm comfortable with. Just a microtrim, about 1/16 of an inch. Happy growing!

ETA: I was going to go scissorless for 2005, but that didn't work for very long. My ends tend to wear out quickly, because the cuticle scales naturally stick out too far.
I only trim splits individually when they appear and I inspect for them pretty often. I've had someone else trim my hair once since April 04 and they trimmed way more than I wanted.
So I'm a do-it-myself-girl for life! I'm using some tiny embroidery shears that are very sharp; this works well for me.
Good luck!

Same as strwberryfine; I check for split ends often...in fact I never trim the whole length of my hair at once unless it has been a REALLY long time as I don't often get split ends.
I think that if you keep your splits in check like the others said so
they don't climb up your hair, then it only depends how you like your
ends. If you want a blunt cut, you'll have to trim a little more
often. I like mine blunt so I do about 1/4 inch every 3
months. That much is probably too much if your hair is completely
natural, but I still have a little highlighting damage on the last 2
inches of my hair, so mine splits pretty quick.
Many people like more natural or tapered ends, and you can get those by
not cutting it at all for a long time and just dusting your
splits. The advantage to those is your ends fit better into a bun
or other updo styles because they aren't so chunky-thick on the
end.

There shouldn't be a fixed time, I.E. every 3 months or whatever. If you're growing it out, I'd say as rarely as possible. Basically it depends on the hair. Some people have stronger hair than others. There are people who have not trimmed at all for years and it was fine. One way or another, hair should be trimmed when it shows signs of needing it, not as a pure routine. No point fixing what isn't broken.

Remembering that you started over with cropped hair, I think that
"shape" trims should be considered only for the bottom tips of sides
and nape to even things. Then, once it becomes one length, or a shape
you like, a trim of an inch or so every year will keep things looking
great. More frequent trimming only cuts off healthy looking growth, I
think, and adds frustration to the seeming interminable process of
attaining desired length.
DW's hair is 32" and it has not been touched ion over 14 months.
Soon it will be trimmed an inch or two, as there are no plans to grow
it longer.
Best, Bob

Periodic "search & destroy" for split, broken and damaged
ends. Have done quite a bit the past couple of months, and the
hair is in much better condition (as far as the number of splits).
I allow trusted friends to trim my hair (shape the ends), but haven't
had this done in almost 3 years now (about 2 years and 8 months).
Well I have just joined this group and I love it!!!! My hair is right passed my shoulder blades and tonight I did a trim of just the split ends, I followed how Anais said to do it and it turned out great. I have always taken care of my own trimming since it started getting long. I have no plans and will not be cutting my hair I want it to my waist but will settl for mid back :-))))
