QuoteReplyTopic: 50mm First-Wash Report Posted: April 03 2005 at 9:18pm
So I finally bit the bullet and washed this new PH 50mm/Dome Classic
hair, and--no surprise here--the wave's almost gone. I didn't brush it
at all when wet or use any heat, but I did use warm water, not cold
(because I just couldn't face it).
Anyway, I'll sleep with it in some boinks tonight and I'm sure it'll
still look nice, but the initial wave it pretty much gone, so it'll
need to be reset after the next wash, I imagine. It is still very soft
and silky, so that's a good thing.
Just for curiosity, has anyone managed to make the 50mm last past two washes?
For anyone who wants to retain that initial wave longer, hold off on washing the length for as long as possible!
I've washed mine I think three times now. If it hadn't been for
the need to get it dry immediately after the third wash I think I
wouldn't have had to use the flocked rollers on it. But I can
bite the bullit and use cool to lukewarm water.
When I dried it I put it in Velcro rollers ad then put onmy soft bonnet
with the dryer on as low as it would go. But I only had 30
minutes and poor planning led to losing some curl.
Get the bonnet dryer. I know you were thinking about it.
Mocha: Yeah, I'll be getting the bonnet soon. My hair's really long, so
I'm sure that contributes to a loss of curl as well, although yours is
pretty long too, if I remember correctly.
I think "boinks" is just something I must've made up or something,
because it seems like I'm the only one who's ever heard of it, lol.
Anyway, it's just basically coiling and twisting up
your hair into a bun and covering it with a schrungi--but instead of
doing one for your whole head, you'd do 4 or 6, whatever--the more
boinks you do, the wavier the results.
In fact, if you had the hair in the boinks, then blasted it with
the blow-dryer for a few minutes before you went to sleep, the results
might be even wavier in the morning; I haven't tried that, but I'll try it tonight.
Here's a visual (btw, I stole these pics and cropped them--they're
actually from a very good tutorial from superstardreads.com about how
to put on drawstring falls).
Step 1: Twist a section of the hair:
Step 2: Wrap it around itself in a coiled bun:
Step 3 (not shown): Cover each little bun with a scrunchi:
I'm recalling advice I heard long ago on how to wash extensions. Pull back and braid the pony in one long length and take your shower. You'll still be able to wash the entire scalp and suds up but the length of the extension doesn't become separated and filled with water to the same extent as if you had the hair falling free. Wonder if this would help retain the initial wave longer.
PS: I never knew the name but I've put my hair up like that before. So I guess I've boinked myself a couple times in the past. tmi?

it could be the conditioner!
what kind of care products did you use?
and did you use fabric softener, if so
how? under the shower while the hair is wet?
did you brush the hair while the conditioner was in?
my last 50mm hairstlye lasted for months..
but i had this before on a costumer.
she had dome wave installed, the very curly stuff and after one time
washing the got very straight!
we figured that she used a very strong fabric conditioner and brushed the
hair with the conditioner. so it got straight.
Sara: I actually didn't use any conditioner, just shampooed the roots,
spritzed the hair with a little diluted fabric softener, and left it to
air-dry (no brushing). When it was totally dry, I spritzed it with Dome
Care and detangled with my fingers and a wide-tooth comb. But again,
the water I used was warm (not hot, but definitely not cold), and
perhaps that's enough to loosen the wave. Either way, after sleeping
with the boinks (4 of em), it's quite wavy now, so I won't even need to
use any rollers or anything. It's also still very soft and silky.
I'm going to try that washing suggetstion, AMM. I never thought of it before, but it makes a lot of sense.

hey jenny - i agree with your assessment. i've washed my 50mm about 3 times now; the wave drops considerably for me after washing. braiding while wet or doing the boinks helps recreate a wave, but it is a different wave and not the 50mm exactly.
hey sara - i guess i never thought about the fabric softener adding to the straightening. i was putting it on like conditioner, leaving it on 1/2 the time and rinsing it 1/2 the time. hmmm. i haven't brushed or combed while wet either...
I'm not sure that the fabric softener affects it too adversely. The
last 50mm I had dropped without using any fabric softener at all. But
again, it still looks very nice. :)

right. gotcha. do you feel like the increased layers have aided the wave jenny? i've gotta go back and review and rereview sara's instructions again to remind myself what she does. i agree, jenny, i just can't bear to not use warm water, the cold thing i just can't do. maybe if i washed my hair in the sink? but for a shower, yikes.

Not really--I don't think they've aided in preserving the initial wave
much, but they do seem to encourage more wave when I set it in boinks
last night. Then again, I waited 5 days to wash it this time, whereas
last time, I only waited 2 days, so those extra 3 days of wear may have
loosened it somewhat, too. Last time, I had some problems with
roughness (which I now attribute to using too many products and heat),
but this time it's still so silky. It's hard to remember exactly what I
did then compared to what I'm doing now.
As you said, it's really quite easy to add wave/curl to this hair as
long as you have the right tools; it's just a matter of figuring out
how to replicate the 50mm wave exactly. Hot rollers, boinks, and braids
all work quite well, but I think I'm going to take another look at the
50mm in the bag to see exactly how that wave pattern is on arrival,
then play around with it a bit. The big, jumbo rollers get pretty close
to the initial look anyway. The biggest hot rollers I've found are 1
3/4 inch, but I think this 50mm might be closer to a 2 1/4- or 2
1/2-inch roller curl; if so, it's probably best re-created with Velcros
and the bonnet.

Yeah I was thinking about getting some super big velcros and possibly
steaming them from the inside, then putting on my bonnet to dry them
the rest of the way out.
Well, after a night in the boinks, it looked pretty wavy again--almost
like the original 50mm. I didn't even use any heat on it. I love
boinks! (Don't mind that dorky one that's still in the top of my
head....)
Thanks girls. It's holding up well. I washed it for the second time
last night and put it in hot rollers this morning for a few minutes,
then boinks again, and it looks the same as in the photos. I still
haven't blown it straight at all. So it's holding up quite well after
two weeks. :)
