..Ok so you buy virgin human hair, say Chinese and you have throughly cleaned it, now what? How do you get all the lovely shades without damaging the hair (for a diy'r to do) Do i really have to bleach it then tone the hair to the shade required? Does anyone have any suggestions?

That I belive would depend on what color you are going for I would do what you wold do on a client wanting a certin shade. If it's virgin then it should respond just as your own hair would. it's just harder I would think to ditribute the color or bleach eavenly on bulk or wefted hair so be sure to use enough product. I have that problem when using demi on ex hair sometimes it is hard to get every strand coveredbut it is doable

I imagine you could just bleach the hair using BSS products, but I think some of this hair actually goes through a multiple-day, temperature-controlled "bleaching" process using off-the-scalp lighteners, so the hair doesn't get completely trashed. SAS was looking into this for a while, but I'm not sure what her findings were. :)

Yeah, our resident scientist Leia had the whole process broken down into chemist language. They contacted some labs that bleached and dyed wool and cashmere to find out about their lightening process, as I recall. Those girls were really on it! Turns out this 'de-pigmentation' is a major process that so far they were not able to recreate for the DIYer, at least not yet. I think Leia was trying to contact some chemical companies or something like that. In a nutshell, it's a big deal.

Yeah i read that and not only does it sound complicated but also sounds expensive.  Im going to do a few tests with peroxide, water and whatever else i can think off.  I have some virgin russian hair (well a sample anyway) so ill test it out in that.  So far though i have put a piece of black processed extension in 40% peroxide (as it is all i have till i get to my local beauty store) the ratio was 4-1 (4 water - 1 peroxide) i will take a look tonight and see if it has changed any.  When i do a proper experiment i will let youse know.

:-)
