QuoteReplyTopic: Blonde hair by a high-lift colour Posted: May 03 2005 at 6:34am
Hello again!
I already wrote to this forum, but here I'm again to ask your help and all comments!!!
I'm now thinking to take a high-lift blonde colour (maybe with some
blonde highlights) instead of bleaching and I'm trying to find a good
shade. Here is some information about me:
My hair color: My natural color is between 6 and 7, light brown with a
bit warm shade in it. I have bleached before (years ago) and taken
blonde highlights and then coloured near to my natural color about 6
months ago. Now growing my color out and then gonna go to the salon.
Hair lenght: A short bob, chin lenght. I probably will keep it that way.
Hair type: Very thick and stif, straight, hard to shape.
Skin: Pale and light, a bit yellowish. Eyes are complexion of green and
brown. Eyebrowns and eyelashes are dark brown or black. Skin of face
does not get a tan.
What I don't want to:
- Just highlights, cos it's not easy to color the roots.
- Bleach, cos it will hurt my hair too much.
- Yellow or orange colour.
Examples (they might be too blonde to get without bleaching, please if
you have a great color in mind, send me a photo!!! I'm thinking maybe
ligh ash blonde, or beige blonde or wheat blonde...)
First let me say that I'm not a pro, but I did lighten my hair using
high lift color (if you click on my signature link, and go the page
that says "my hair journey", the first picture where I'm blonde is what
I did with high lift color....I used to be good at chemical colors,
then the henna was my big disaster!). It took dying it a few
times with high lift color to get it that white.
If you go to a salon, just bring these pictures and they should be able
to figure out how to get it that way...the only problem is from light
brown it's going to take a few tries. If I were doing it on me I
would first lift the hair with something with a green base to counter
the red tones that will come out (this will give you yellow hair after
the first go, so don't freak out!) then use another violet shade that
counters the yellow and only lifts slightly more to give you a light
beige blonde like in the last 2 pics (they may even have to do that one
twice, depending how it comes out).

If you have between a 6 and 7 natural color, you should most definitely be able to lighten to a light blonde with a highlift. Like Susan pointed out though, your previously colored ends are another story. You could try and strip out the old color using at home methods that are "gentler" like Clarifying shampoos or Prell or dish soap. Color cannot lift color, so a high-lift color cannot lighten your ends but you can always get bleach hilights over this color. (I believe someone else on this board ran into a similiar situation, check back to see. Her ends turned out orange and her virgin regrowth turned out a nice blonde shade) I think in your case if you truly want to be light blonde, you should:
1) have the color stripped (if it is darker than a dark golden blonde)
2) Have virgin regrowth colored using appropriate base color, ash should work to counteract your natural gold tones (highlift blonde if stylist thinks will blend with stripped ends)
3) get heavy bleach hilights over entire head using a mild bleach you should not have to use anything over 20 volume-And don't let them put you under a hot air dryer to speed it up, this is how I ended up with breakage six years ago. Sure, it takes longer which is inconvenient for them, but it is really bad for the already fragile hairshaft.
You may want to wait a few days if you can between steps 1 and steps 2,3. Go home after hair is stripped, don't look in a mirror and just deep condition it with a great deep conditioner with proteins and amino acids. Good luck!

I don't think that using highlift is a good option for you right now, since you've already dyed your hair.
I really think that a nice blonde color is not achievable in one step, just using highlift, since your hair is dyed)
(highlift can't lift artficial color, and It may take several applications. Several applications with highlift can actually be more damaging in the long run than bleach)
The best option would be to first use colorfix on the colored parts of your hair to get rid off all the brown dye. Do not bleach the hair right after color removing, you'll have to wait a day or 2. To let the hair and scalp rest. Deep conditon the hair after using colorfix.
Then bleach your whole hair to pale yellow (the color of the inside of a banana) I'd recommend Wella Wellite cream lite with 20 volume developer. Don't bleach all the way to white, because then you may end up with breakage.

As I stated earlier, color, whether highlift or not, cannot lift artificial pigment out of hair. However, if a person's desired overall color is a light blonde (Level 9 to 10) and not bleached white blonde (Level 11 to 12) then I would not recommend anyone bleach their hair, unless it is a shorter style. Stripping the hair and getting heavy bleach hilights all over will give a more natural light blonde color than an all-over bleach, especially on someone with black eyebrows and dark eyes like Floe has. There are very few instances where bleached hair ever looks like a blonde "found in nature", and coincidentally this is usually on blue-eyed people with fair skin and light hair to begin with~!
I have been going blonde for many years and have tried numerous methods for blondeing. In my humble opinion, highlift with bleach highlights is the only way for people with a natural level 6 or darker to go a realistic light blonde THAT can be touched up every 4 to 5 weeks. If you only highlight, you will have a noticeable line of demarcation ( the dreaded " roots") and you have to wait at least 6 weeks between touch-ups, and only coloring usually leaves you with a flat, monochromatic haircolor. It must be done in conjunction with the other (or lowlights, whichever you prefer.) Bleaching all-over is usually touched up every 3 to 4 weeks, but aside from the obvious damage it does to hair (have you ever seen really long bleached healthy glorious-looking hair?) your roots look even darker against hair that void of pigment.
Floe certainly has things to consider, but I think her FIRST step should be stripping the current color and seeing how light it is. If she is somewhere in the blonde range post-stripping, then a stylist could just touch up her regrowth with color (not the ends) to a level 9 or so and then do a heavy highlight over the entire head with bleach. Unless Floe wants extra light whiteish blonde, I think this is the safest, most natural-looking route.
Thanks to all of you! You are all so nice and helpful!
I'm no in hurry, my current hair color is ok, there is no clear line
between my virgin hair and the coloured hair, thanks to a good hair
dresser! So I will be patient and wait until the color has grown away.
I'm now on a good way, cos I haven't coloured my hair in 6 months. Like
I said, I have a short bob (chin length) and I'm gonna keep it that
way, so it would not take an eternity to get rid of the colour. Blond
hair is my dream, but like I said, I can wait a bit, so it's easier
then to make it lighter. And I definitely will go to a salon to do that
when that day comes.
It's nice to plan now what color would be a good choice and what is
possible, that's why I asked your help and you gave me your help, so
thanks a lot again! I will write again, if something new comes to my
mind or if I decide to do something with my hair anyway :) Comments and
tips are still welcome!
